Summary

Quarterback Rank: #31All Players: #291
It took some time but Cassel eventually took over the starting job in Minnesota, starting the last five games of the season. And Cassel played well for the most part, finishing the season with 12 total touchdowns to nine interceptions. He topped 240-passing yards five of nine games. Cassel provided a spark for the passing game and will get a chance to compete for the starting job in Minnesota this season. Cassel rebounded well after a few down seasons and looks to have his career back on the right path. Cassel doesn't have a great arm and takes few chances downfield. He struggles with accuracy at times and turnovers. He does have a track record of some success, though, and looked to regain some lost confidence last season. Remember, he had some big showings with the Patriots and Chiefs, so the track record is there for him as a legit NFL starter.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
Even if he is starting, Cassel isn't a very exciting fantasy option. He'll be up and down in a starting role. He is capable of the big game, making him spot start material if he is starting for the Vikings.

Notes

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater saw reps with the first-team offense in practice Wednesday, July 30. According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, QB Matt Cassel appears to lead the race for the starting quarterback job, but Bridgewater has closed the gap.

Minnesota Vikings QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder have been evenly splitting reps during the early part of training camp, according to offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Turner will split the reps two ways after the team's upcoming off day.

Minnesota Vikings QBs Teddy Bridgewater and Matt Cassel saw a majority of the snaps during spring workouts, but QB Christian Ponder has a chance to start, and head coach Mike Zimmer claims it will be a fair competition. 'Actually, I think Christian has done a very good job in the time that we've had him and how much he has improved in that amount of time,' Zimmer said. 'We're going to give everyone a fair shot, and preseason games will help determine it. We want someone who is going to take care of the football, lead the team in the right direction and when called upon be able to win football games.'
Fantasy Impact: This is a true competition but Cassel would seem to have the upperhand right now.

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner has been very happy with QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder heading up to training camp. 'We've got a really, really good group,' he said, explaining that it won't be hard to parcel out snaps in the apparent three-headed battle. Cassel is expected to be the starter, but Turner has praised Bridgewater for his arm strength and quick learning.

USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero thinks it would be a shock if QB Matt Cassel isn't named the starter in training camp next month.

The Minnesota Vikings' quarterback competition this offseason is a wide open battle between QBs Matt Cassel, Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder, according to head coach Mike Zimmer. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner will plan on having all three passers see enough snaps in mandatory minicamp to make sure that they all have a 'legitimate opportunity' to win the starting job in training camp next month. Zimmer won't rush into a decision, and he made it clear that Cassel won't enter camp as the presumptive starter. Both Cassel and Bridgewater had more snaps than Ponder during organized team activities, and both looked sharper than Ponder.
Fantasy Impact: Cassel has the best shot to start but we'll know more during training camp.

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater said he'd be fine with serving in a backup role in his rookie season. Bridgewater missed only three passes all day during organized team activities Thursday, June 5, and marched the team down the field during the two-minute drill. He had some first-team snaps Thursday, but QB Matt Cassel had the majority of the starting repetitions and is expected to enter training camp as the No. 1 quarterback. 'Right now, I'm just learning from Matt.' Bridgewater said. 'He's a veteran right now, and I notice the things that he's doing when he's in the huddle. I'm taking notes from him and Christian also. Those guys have had past success.'
