Summary

Running Back Rank: #25All Players: #61
Mendenhall failed to top the 1,000-yard mark for the third straight season. He wasn't quite as consistent as previous seasons as the Steelers had all sorts of issues running the ball much of the year. He had a couple 100-yard games but also had fewer than 50-rushing yards six games. Mendenhall did score nine touchdowns, giving him 22 touchdowns the last two seasons. He has been finding the end zone on a pretty regular basis in a good Steelers' offense. In the last three seasons, Mendenhall averages 1,103-rushing yards, 194-receiving yards and 10 touchdowns per season. The Steelers are looking for more balance in the offense this season, which could mean more consistent work for Mendenhall. He is a pretty complete back. Mendenhall is a very good between the tackles runner but has the speed to break some big plays. He also is a decent receiving option as evident by his 66 catches the last three seasons. Mendenhall is recovering from a torn ACL, though, and might not be ready for the start of the season. He could be moving to a backup role for the coming season once he gets healthy.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
Mendenhall's value is going south. He is coming off a major knee injury and could be headed to a backup role. Consider him a No. 3 or 4 back for fantasy teams. He could get 700 or so total yards and a few scores.

comments about Rashard Mendenhall

Notes

Arizona Cardinals RB Rashard Mendenhall never was 100 percent healed from his serious knee injury last season, according to Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert. Although Mendenhall returned for the Steelers' fourth game, Colbert believes he never got back to the shape he was in 2011. 'Honestly, I don't think he ever quite got to the point where he was 100 percent as we've seen him before,' Colbert said.
Fantasy Impact: If healthy, he could be a real surprise this season and earn the starting job in Arizona.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians praised RB Rashard Mendenhall Wednesday, March 13, just one day after the free-agent was signed. 'As a running back he's the total package,' Arians said. 'He's a big, strong every-down back with speed who can pass block and also catch the ball. I've said before: he's a big man with little-people feet, meaning he can run like he's 180 (pounds) but also pound the ball like he's 230.'
Fantasy Impact: Mendenhall could have the inside track to start for the Cardinals in 2013.

Pittsburgh Steelers team president Art Rooney II said he expected more from impending free-agent RB Rashard Mendenhall this season, and added the team could look to upgrade the position in the offseason. 'The season Rashard had was not what we would have hoped for,' Rooney said. 'Obviously, we knew he was coming back from an injury so there were some unknowns there. So, without getting into the real specifics with Rashard, it's fair to say that we are going to need a better performance out of the running back position if we're going to be successful. Whether it's Rashard or Jonathan or Isaac or somebody else, we have to be better at that position, as well as others, but certainly at that position. In this offseason that's something we've got to look at and decide how we get better and who we get better with.'
