Summary

Running Back Rank: #90All Players: #411
Smith had double-digit carries the first two games of last season but didn't have double-digit touches the rest of the year. He wasn't much of factor in the offense, finishing with 213 total yards in 12 games. He didn't build on the momentum of his strong finish in 2011. Smith has been a steady decline since his rookie season. Smith is proving to be a backup more than anything. The positive for Smith is he is just 26 years old, so he has time jumpstart his career. Smith has decent size at running back, but also possesses some speed and big-play ability. He does lack some patience and vision as a runner. Smith is a capable receiver, catching 123 passes in five seasons.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
Smith isn't worth a pick right now. He might be worth a waiver-wire add if he starts getting some playing time but until that happens, don't bother. Smith could get 500 or so total yards and a couple scores.

comments about Kevin Smith

Notes

Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith said he is not sure why he was not used more this season after performing well in 2011. Smith finished the season with 37 carries for 134 yards and one touchdown as well as 79 receiving yards and one touchdown. 'I didn't really see why. There was never an answer given as to why. I think I dealt with it like a professional, and in my mind, I would have been able to deal with it easier if there was something told to me like, 'Hey Kevin, you need to work on this,'' Smith said. Smith said he would still like to re-sign with the team this offseason.

Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith saw action on 19 of his team's offensive snaps in Week 11 against the Green Bay Packers, as opposed to just 10 for RB Joique Bell.
Fantasy Impact: Not sure if this is going to be a trend going forward but it is something to watch.

Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith may have fallen to third on the team's depth chart if the team's rotation during Week 3 is any indication. Smith did not have a carry during the game and had very limited snaps against the Tennessee Titans.
Fantasy Impact: Smith has fallen down the depth chart in a hurry. He likely isn't getting any significant time unless Mikel Leshoure gets hurt.

Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith carried 13 times for 62 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 against the St. Louis Rams, and he added four receptions for 29 yards and the game-winning TD catch with just 10 seconds left in the game.
Fantasy Impact: Smith had a solid showing in a starting role. He is a No. 2 fantasy back as long as he is starting for the Lions.

Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith (ankle) suffered an ankle injury in the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 25, and is questionable to return.
Fantasy Impact: This is a concern because Smith battled ankle injuries much of last season.

Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith (quadriceps) took a knee to his quadriceps during practice Wednesday, Aug. 8. Head coach Jim Schwartz said Smith should be fine.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has been happy with RB Kevin Smith during training camp. 'He's a very consistent player. He's very good mentally,' Schwartz said. He went on to note Smith knows the team's offense inside and out and has done a nice job of picking up a few special teams. 'Kevin has had not just a good training camp, but a good offseason program for us,' Schwartz noted.
Fantasy Impact: At this point, Smith is the starter for the Lions. His value is going up.
