Cleveland Browns LB Jabaal Sheard expects to play a similar role to what DE Mario Williams did in the Buffalo Bills defense last year with head coach Mike Pettine working with him. With this scheme I'm a little bit more of a defensive end, so I get to rush a little bit more, Sheard said after practice in mandatory minicamp. ? More like Mario. They paid him a lot of money, so you know they got him going after the quarterback. Sheard thinks he could be heading into the best year of his career based on the way Pettine plans on using him. Sheard had played defensive end in a 4-3 system his entire life until last year. Sheard will remain an outside linebacker under Pettine, but he won't be used nearly as much in pass coverage.

Cleveland Browns LB Barkevious Mingo is playing with the second team defense in training camp, and he has also worked on various special teams units. Mingo says he embraces and loves working on special teams. However, if there is one criticism, he needs to work on his pass rush moves. He lacks a strong secondary move at this point, and until he develops his pass rush ability and sharpens his coverage ability, LB Jabaal Sheard is expected to serve as a starter with Mingo coming in on pass-rush specific downs.

Cleveland Browns LB Jabaal Sheard was uncomfortable lining up on the right side during his rookie season, and he was quickly moved to the left side. Even on the left side, he has struggled against the run in his first two seasons, so he might be better used on the strong side or teams could take advantage in the run game. If LB Barkevious Mingo catches on quickly, Sheard could be used in more of a rotation sub role off the bench.
