Outlook

The 49ers are a team on the rise. They have a top-notch defense that can get it done against the run and pass. And while their offense isn't the best, they are getting better offensively. The passing game should be better and Frank Gore still anchors a solid rushing attack. San Fran should be the cream of the drop in the NFC West but might not have the offense just yet to make a Super Bowl run. They are inching closer, though.

FANTASY BREAKOUT

Alex Smith, QB. Tough to predict a breakout season for Smith but everything is lined up for him to have his best season to date. The 49ers really upgraded at receiver, signing two in free agency while drafting another. Smith finally has some top-notch weapons at his disposal. The 49ers showed a tendency to throw a little more down the stretch, which is a good sign for Smith as well. Don't expect huge numbers by any means in this run-first offense but Smith should set career highs and get a few more chances to throw in 2012.

FANTASY DUD

Mario Manningham, WR. The 49ers upgraded at receiver, adding several new players to the mix. Manningham might be the biggest addition. He should man one of the starting spots for the team or at least serve as the No. 3 if Randy Moss reverts back to old form. Either way, Manningham will play a lot. But even with that said, his numbers won't be great in the 49ers run-first offense. The highest yardage total for a receiver last season in San Fran was 874. Manningham might have the occasional big game but probably would have posted better numbers if he stayed with the Giants - even if he was just the No. 3 receiver for New York.

Team Notes

May 24, 11:32 AM The San Francisco 49ers restructured C Jonathan Goodwin's contract, reducing his base salary from $3.7 million to $2 million. They guaranteed $1 million of the deal in exchange.
May 22, 08:33 PM San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said the team isn't considering re-signing WR Randy Moss after learning that WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') tore his Achilles' Wednesday, May 22. Harbaugh said the team is intrigued with the depth of young receivers they have on roster, and they are looking forward to them stepping up to the task. WR A.J. Jenkins, the team's 2012 first-round pick, will have a chance to make an impact in his second year. Jenkins has spent the offseason adding muscle and working with QB Colin Kaepernick.
May 22, 06:53 PM San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has high hopes for WR Ricardo Lockette this season.
May 22, 05:53 PM San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he does not think WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') will miss the entire 2013 regular season.

Fantasy Impact: We aren't so sure. It is going to be tough for a receiver to return from this type of injury before the season is over.
May 22, 04:13 PM Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') has undergone surgery to repair his torn Achilles' tendon.
May 22, 04:13 PM Updating a previous report, doctors believe San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') will miss six months because of his torn Achilles' tendon. Doctors have recommended that Crabtree undergo surgery as soon as possible.
May 22, 02:23 PM San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' tendon during organized team activities Tuesday, May 21, and will undergo what could be season-ending surgery.

Fantasy Impact: This is a huge loss for the 49ers. Crabtree was setup for a career season before the injury.
May 21, 09:13 PM San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins focused this offseason on adding muscle and knowledge of the game. He bulked up to 196 pounds, which is four more than his listed weight. 'If I get to 200 (pounds), I'll be good to go,' Jenkins said.
May 21, 09:13 PM San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith (shoulder) is still recovering from labrum surgery during the offseason. He has been doing a 'little bit' of work at the start of organized team activities (OTAs).
May 21, 09:13 PM San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and WRs A.J. Jenkins and Ricardo Lockette lived together for two months in Atlanta during the offseason, working together at a nearby training facility. And since the opening of the team's offseason program, WR Anquan Boldin has served as a mentor, helping the two receivers on route running after practice.
May 17, 03:42 PM San Francisco 49ers LBs Parys Haralson and Corey Lemonier are expected to compete to be the primary backup at outside linebacker. Haralson is better suited for the base 3-4 defensive alignment while Lemonier likely will be used in pass-rush situations.
May 17, 03:32 PM San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins has worked hard in the weight room this offseason and appears to have added more muscle than last season. Jenkins is expected to be one of the candidates for the No. 3 wide receiver job this season.
May 17, 03:32 PM The San Francisco 49ers would like to rotate players along the defensive line this season to make sure DEs Justin Smith and Ray McDonald do not wear down during games.
May 17, 03:32 PM San Francisco 49ers QB Colt McCoy is the clear favorite to win the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.
May 16, 04:22 PM Free-agent WR Randy Moss (49ers) is still undecided if he will play football this season. There was reportedly interest in Moss a few months ago, although nothing has transpired since. Moss had only 434 yards last season.

Fantasy Impact: We doubt he gets another chance even if he wants to continue to play.
May 15, 02:23 PM San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said he believes in using multiple running backs that can do different things on offense. 'I'm a big believer -- we are big believers -- in a three-headed approach,' Baalke said. 'In other words, having a group of backs that bring to the table something a little bit different than the other one so you can do a lot of different things. But also having those backs be able to do enough things the same so you don't become so predictable on game day.' RBs Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James likely will see playing time this season.

Fantasy Impact: It wouldn't surprise to see Gore see a bit of a decrease in touches this season, especially if the 49ers want to keep him a little more fresh.
