Outlook

The Bucs made strides defensively last season, which was a big plus. This led to a few more wins but they still weren't a playoff team. The key for the team this year might be Freeman. If he plays consistent and takes his game to a new level, the Bucs could win a few more games and get in the playoffs. But for now, we consider the Bucs a .500 team. They have some nice pieces on both sides of the ball, especially offensively with Doug Martin, an emerging star, and Vincent Jackson, but this team isn't quite there yet to compete with the elite of the league.

FANTASY BREAKOUT

Tom Crabtree, TE. Crabtree is the best pass-catching tight end on the roster and could emerge as the starter before long for the Bucs. They have some openings at tight end and Crabtree finally has a shot to earn some more playing time. He won't be a legit fantasy starter but could be a top backup for fantasy teams. The Bucs gave Dallas Clark some work last year, so Crabtree could expect a similar season. He has some potential, making some big plays last season when given the chance. He averaged 25.4 yards per catch last year and scored three touchdowns on eight receptions.

FANTASY DUD

Josh Freeman, QB. We aren't sure if Freeman will make it through the entire season as the Bucs' starter. He has rookie Mike Glennon pushing him for playing time. The Bucs clearly aren't sold on Freeman as their starter, so they used a high draft pick on Glennon. This doesn't bode well for Freeman. He could be on a short leash, especially if Glennon plays well in camp and preseason action.

Team Notes

Jun 18, 10:33 AM Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson said QB Josh Freeman has returned a far more comfortable and confident quarterback in the second year in offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan's system.
Jun 14, 02:53 PM Tampa Bay Buccaneers LBs Dekoda Watson and Jonathan Casillas will be competing for the starting strongside linebacker job during training camp.
Jun 13, 02:43 PM The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed WR Derek Hagan (Raiders) Thursday, June 13. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Fantasy Impact: He'll compete for a roster spot. We wouldn't expect much.
Jun 12, 04:03 PM Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Williams said he is very close to signing a contract extension with the team. General manager Mark Dominik said he would like to get a deal done with Williams before the start of training camp.
Jun 12, 01:03 PM Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman, entering his fifth season, has played for two head coaches and in three systems, with three offensive coordinators and four quarterbacks coaches. The passer is optimistic about how his offense will perform in Year 2 under offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan. 'I think our comfort level is so much higher, and I speak for the entire offense,' Freeman said. 'It's just the communication. It's all functioning at a higher level. That comes with experience. Everybody is going to be on the same page, and we're not going to hinder ourselves.' New quarterbacks coach John McNulty places more emphasis on how many points the offense scores than things like Freeman's turnovers (17 in 2012, including 10 in a span of three games) and low completion percentage (54.8). 'The payoff is more than the dink and dunk.' Freeman also stated that he doesn't feel added pressure even though he's entering the final year of his contract. Freeman was a surprise QB2 who turned in QB1 numbers for a good stretch last season before stumbling down the stretch. Perhaps the continuity will allow him to maintain a lofty pace for a longer period. Or perhaps he'll remain inconsistent, and the pressure with drafted QB Mike Glennon waiting in the wings will get to him and the O. Freeman is an interesting QB2 in 2013, for sure.

Fantasy Impact: Many are writing Freeman off this year but we still think he can perform well and help fantasy teams as a low-end No. 1. This is an offense on the rise.
Jun 11, 01:33 PM Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Tom Crabtree will be watched closely by the team's scouts and coaches in minicamp this week to see how he's adjusting to the offense and QB Josh Freeman. Tampa Bay's shift from a West Coast-style of offense to more of a vertical passing attack has reduced the emphasis placed on the tight end. The Buccaneers believe that Crabtree has the ability to be a threat in the passing game, however, and he could prompt them to alter how much they involve the position. Tight end is a deep position and Crabtree would be low on the pecking order even if he proved the Bucs right, so until there's a lot more to this story, fantasy owners needn't monitor Crabtree.
Jun 11, 01:23 PM Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Kevin Ogletree has to beat out WRs Tiquan Underwood, David Douglas, Chris Owusu and Eric Page to win the third wide receiver position, but the Bucs are very high on Ogletree, according to The Tampa Tribune's Roy Cummings. The third wideout in this offense is unlikely to have fantasy value without an injury occurring. Ogletree was the favorite for that job when he was signed.
Jun 11, 10:03 AM Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan said QB Josh Freeman is much smoother in the offseason this season. 'There has been a lot of improvement from Josh, and really all the offensive players the second year in the system,' Sullivan said. 'This time last year - it is like a foreign language - just learning the formations and the calls. Now we have a complete offseason, a training camp, a preseason and 16 regular season games, and things are much smoother and we are really excited abut where we are at.'
Jun 10, 09:03 PM The Jacksonville Jaguars are scheduled to work out DL Tim Crowder (Buccaneers), TE Lance Kearse, P Ken Parrish (Falcons) and CB Lionel Smith (Lions).
Jun 10, 05:33 PM The Chicago Bears have traded OT Gabe Carimi to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 2014 sixth-round draft choice.
Jun 10, 02:33 PM Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said RB Jeff Demps has been excused the team's mandatory minicamp.
Jun 10, 08:33 AM Tampa Bay Buccaneers OT Gabe Carimi will battle for a job on the right side of the line.
Jun 09, 08:43 PM The Tampa Bay Buccaneers acquired OL Gabe Carimi from the Chicago Bears Sunday, June 9, in exchange for a conditional draft pick, a source confirms. The deal is contingent upon Carimi passing a physical in Tampa Monday, June 10. Buccaneers offensive line coach Bob Bostad coaches Carimi at the University of Wisconsin.

Fantasy Impact: Maybe a change of scenery will get him going. He certainly has the talent.
Jun 08, 12:03 PM Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said he believes CB Darrelle Revis (knee) will be ready for the start of the regular season but would not give a timetable for his return. 'Totally confident,' Dominik said. 'He's in great shape right now, he's running full speed, he's cutting, he's doing all the things we'd want him to do from a training standpoint, a rehabilitation standpoint.'
Jun 06, 09:59 AM Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Da'Quan Bowers has only recorded 4.5 sacks since he debuted in 2011. Head coach Greg Schiano said that he's banking on Bowers becoming an every-down option instead of a situational pass rusher. Bowers thinks that the way Schiano has drawn up the ways to use DT Gerald McCoy could draw significant attention, freeing up Bowers for more and better attempts at bringing down the opposing quarterback. The arrival of CB Darrelle Revis and FS Dashon Goldson should aid their coverage, which would translate to more time for Bowers to get into the backfield.
Jun 05, 04:33 PM Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis (knee) said he has made progress in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament but will not say if he thinks his knee is close to 100 percent. 'I cannot really put a number on it,' Revis said. 'I can tell it is getting stronger. ... I am out here running and cutting. Even in the weight room we are getting stronger. There is really no percentage on it right now, but I can tell I feel better than I did a couple weeks ago.' Revis said he still hopes to be ready for the start of the regular season and expects to play at the same level he did before the injury.
