Summary

Quarterback Rank: #18All Players: #90
Smith was having another decent season before getting hurt and watching Colin Kaepernick take over as the starter for the 49ers. Smith was benched the rest of the year even when he was healthy enough to play, serving as the top backup. Smith had 13 touchdowns to five interceptions in nine games before the injury/benching. He completed 70 percent of his passes but didn't do a great job of making plays downfield. He had fewer than 150-passing yards two games. Smith can still be a starter in this league, though. He has the track record of success and winning games in the NFL. He still doesn't have a 20-touchdown season as a pro but did break 3,000-passing yards in 2011. Smith has a big arm, moves around the pocket pretty well and will make plays running the ball (130-plus rushing yards each of last two seasons). His accuracy is improving, though, and he limits turnovers for the most part. Smith heads to Kansas City to take over their offense, an offense that should throw the ball plenty. He could be setup for a career season.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
Smith is an intriguing fantasy option. Andy Reid has a history of producing good fantasy numbers for quarterbacks. Smith has never produced big numbers in a starting role but that could change this year. If all goes well for him, he could get around 4,000 yards and 25 touchdowns, making him a low-end No. 1 or top backup for fantasy teams.

comments about Alex Smith

Notes

The Kansas City Chiefs have practiced some plays from the pistol formation during organized team activities. QB Alex Smith likely would have to use his legs and arm in the formation since it includes the option in the plays.

The San Francisco 49ers would receive the Kansas City Chiefs' second-round pick in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 as part of the deal for QB Alex Smith.

San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith, who will be traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, should benefit in head coach Andy Reid's offense, particularly in the passing game, according to analyst Trent Dilfer. Reid will provide an enhanced passing game that's heavy on short and intermediate routes, which will suit Smith's strengths. 'Now he's going to the same structure and a superior passing system,' Dilfer said. 'Not a superior system - I'm not taking a shot at the Niners at all. I love what the Niners do. But just from a passing standpoint. A passing-tree standpoint. Multiplicity in the dropback, and playaction and movement game. The screen game. Trick plays. You name it. This is one of the better passing systems in the league.'
Fantasy Impact: Smith has a chance to be a legit low-end No. 1 fantasy quarterback. His stats should increase.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick said he believes QB Alex Smith will be successful next season no matter where he plays. 'Of course, nothing can be finalized yet. Whether Alex is with us or he's somewhere else next season, he's been a great teammate to me,' Kaepernick said. '(He's) been a great friend, a great mentor. So anywhere he goes, or if he's still with us, he's gonna be successful.'

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis said it will be difficult seeing QB Alex Smith play for another team in 2013 after being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. 'It was tough for me because I really care about Alex,' Davis said. 'I love the guy. It's hard to see him leave, but I know the business. I understand it. It's the nature of the business.' Davis added Smith handled his role well after he was relegated to backup status following the emergence of QB Colin Kaepernick. 'He's a classy guy. You saw what happened to him this year. He remained a 49er and he didn't complain. He didn't go to coach saying, 'Coach I should be the starter. I had a concussion and you took me out.' He didn't do none of those things.'

The San Francisco 49ers-Kansas City Chiefs trade involving QB Alex Smith may not yet be finalized, according to former Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli. 'I think they are still working through some of the absolute details of what the compensation is,' Pioli said. 'Because I think what happens in these trades, if you give up a pick for something or if you're going to give up two picks, what's been a new trend in the NFL is people generally kick picks back. Because teams don't like to see their, even if they are going to give up a higher pick they want to get something later in the draft so they at least have a volume of picks to have more opportunities.'
