Summary

Running Back Rank: #22All Players: #46
Mathews failed to build on the momentum of the previous season, struggling much of last year. He missed more time because of injury and rushed for just 707 yards in 12 games. He also scored just one touchdown, another huge disappointment. Mathews averaged less than four yards per carry for the first time in his career (3.8). Mathews has one 1,000-yard season in his career but less than 710-rushing yards his other two seasons. He has missed games each of his first three seasons in the league, failing to shed his injury-prone label. This season could be a make or break season for Mathews. He will need to prove he is a legit starter than can be trusted in this league. He will get to play in a new offense, though, which could be a good thing for him. A fresh start could help jumpstart his career. Mathews certainly has the ability to be a top player. He runs with power, but also has good speed and explosiveness, a rare combination at running back. Mathews doesn't have great moves in the open field but still has some big-play ability. Mathews does well as a blocker and is a capable receiver.
FANTASY OUTLOOK
Please don't take him as a No. 1 back despite his upside. Take him as a No. 2 and hope all finally goes well for him. He certainly is capable of helping fantasy teams. We would temper expectations, though. If - and that is a big if - he can stay healthy, we think he can get 1,400 or so total yards and eight touchdowns.

comments about Ryan Mathews

Notes

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said he's 'been just an average back.' After bulking up last year in an effort to absorb hits more effectively, he has leaned out this year while also incorporating different stretches to stay flexible. Mathews is also studying more, specifically changing and working on understanding his blocking technique.

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco praised RB Ryan Mathews, calling him a talented back, and someone who could be a 'bellcow back.'
Fantasy Impact: This might be his last chance to be a featured back, so Mathews is in a make or break season in 2013.

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said he would like to get a running back to compliment RB Ryan Mathews. Telesco said he believes Mathews can handle it on his own, but must prove he can stay healthy.

The San Diego Chargers are beginning to wonder if RB Ryan Mathews will ever become the type of player they thought he would become when they selected him 12th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. The team would like him to become more polished and seize the full-time running back role. San Diego used RB Ronnie Brown in a receiving role this year in order to keep Mathews fresh; Brown ran a passing route on 60.4 percent of his offensive snaps, while Mathews ran routes 42.1 percent of the time. Mathews still believes he can be a game-changing back for the Chargers, however. 'It's time for me to show them why they bumped up all the spots they did to draft me,' Mathews, 25, said. 'I've shown greatness at times, and I've shown I can be the worst player at times. You've got to be consistent, and that's what I plan to do, Just be a little more consistent player and just be the guy they knew when they drafted.'
Fantasy Impact: His career is up in the air at this point, especially with a new general manager and head coach coming aboard.
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) underwent surgery on his left clavicle Monday, Dec. 17, and he is expected to be recovered in plenty of time to take part in the team's voluntary workouts in April. 'If you were to ask me four months ago, 'Do you think he's going to break his left clavicle?' I would have said he's more likely to be struck by lightning,' Dr. Daniel Kharrazi said. Mathews broke his right clavicle in the preseason. Kharrazi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Mathews' shoulders, and he expects the clavicle to heal at full strength. Kharrazi also said he does not expect Mathews to break either of his clavicles in the future.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) suffered a broken clavicle in the Week 15 game against the Carolina Panthers, and he is done for the season. He suffered a broken right clavicle in the preseason.
Fantasy Impact: Mathews continues to do little to prove he can stay healthy.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said Friday, Dec. 14, that he is ready to step up with RB Ronnie Brown (hamstring) not expected to play in Week 15. Mathews is expected to receive more handoffs and passes than he typically does. 'You've just got to step up,' Mathews said.
Fantasy Impact: Mathews seems setup for one of his bigger games of the season.
The San Diego Chargers ran the ball just 11 times in their Week 13 game. RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) had just nine carries for 26 yards. The Chargers have not had a 100-yard rusher all season.
