Framber Valdez Sep 19 10:53am ET

Houston Astros LHP Framber Valdez (finger) threw for a second consecutive day Saturday, Sept. 18.

Michael Brantley Sep 19 10:53am ET

Houston Astros OF Michael Brantley (finger) will resume baseball activities Sunday, Sept. 18, according to manager Dusty Baker.

Andrew Chafin Sep 19 10:50am ET

Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Andrew Chafin tossed a scoreless ninth inning on Saturday to earn his fifth save of the season. Chafin didn't make things easy as he allowed a leadoff single to Shohei Ohtani and wound up loading the bases before inducing a game-ending lineout. Despite the stress in the ninth, Chafin nailed down the save as the A's bullpen seems to have fallen into a full-blown committee in the ninth inning. Sergio Romo earned the save on Friday and Lou Trivino is also in the mix late in games. Chafin has the best numbers of any A's reliever and seems to be the top option for manager Bob Melvin, making him the de facto choice to roster in fantasy for those chasing saves.

James Kaprielian Sep 19 10:40am ET

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian earned his eighth win of the season on Saturday night with six shutout innings versus the Angels. Where did that come from? Kaprielian had struggled mightily prior to this start as he had an ERA of 6.51 since July 27 and it was announced he would transition to a bullpen role. Daulton Jefferies was slated to make this start, but he was scratched with an elbow injury earlier in the day. Perhaps Kaprielian didn't overthink this start as it came as a surprise, perhaps he just dominated a weak Angels lineup, but either way, it was an encouraging outing from the 27-year-old rookie. Despite one good start, Kaprielian remains a high-risk fantasy option moving forward. He's scheduled to face the Mariners on Thursday.

Luis Frias Sep 19 10:33am ET

The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled RHP Luis Frias from Class AAA Reno Saturday, Sept. 18. INF Andrew Young was optioned to Reno in a corresponding move.

Daulton Jefferies Sep 19 10:30am ET

Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Daulton Jefferies (elbow) was scratched from his start on Saturday versus the Angels with an injury to his pitching elbow. Jefferies will be placed on the injured list with right elbow ulnar neuritis, according to Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle. The news comes as a bummer for Jefferies who was slated to make his second start of the season on Saturday with James Kaprielian transitioning to a bullpen role. Kaprielian wound up pitching well on Saturday, but remains a high-risk fantasy option as he was struggling mightily before the move to the bullpen. Jefferies won't pitch again this season and could be affected heading into 2022 as elbow injuries can be tricky on pitchers.

    Ji-Man Choi Sep 19 10:23am ET

Tampa Bay Rays 1B Ji-Man Choi (wrist) experienced soreness in his left wrist following a collision with Detroit Tigers OF Derek Hill (knee) Saturday, Sept. 18, but remained in the game.

Derek Hill Sep 19 10:23am ET

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers OF Derek Hill (knee) left the game against the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, Sept. 18, because of a left knee injury. Manager A.J. Hinch said it appeared to be a hyperextended knee injury and believes that he will need to be placed on the injured list

Taylor Walls Sep 19 10:23am ET

Tampa Bay Rays SS Taylor Walls (illness) was scratched from the lineup against the Detroit Tigers Saturday, Sept. 18, due to general illness. Manager Kevin Cash said Walls had tested negative for COVID-19, to his knowledge.

Pablo Lopez Sep 19 10:23am ET

Miami Marlins RHP Pablo Lopez (shoulder) threw limited batting practice Saturday, Sept. 18.

Aaron Nola Sep 19 10:20am ET

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings to earn his eighth victory Saturday at the Mets. Nola had his good stuff in this one as he picked up nine strikeouts against just one walk. It hasn't always been pretty, but Nola has had another strong season despite his 4.48 ERA. The right-hander has one of the biggest gaps between his actual ERA and his skill-based ERA indicators since his SIERA (3.20), xERA (3.41), and xFIP (3.29) all imply his ERA should be at least a run lower. Nola's 1.11 WHIP is well above average and he's striking batters out at a healthy 30 percent clip. He'll will be a popular bounce-back candidate in 2022 drafts, but for now, fantasy managers should keep starting Nola and hope for another positive result Thursday versus the Pirates.

Reid Detmers Sep 19 10:20am ET

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Reid Detmers (COVID-19) threw a simulated game on Saturday, according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. Detmers has been on the injured list since August 25 after testing positive for COVID-19. Before landing on the IL, he posted a 7.11 ERA with 17 strikeouts over four starts and 19 innings. The simulated game keeps him on track to return to the team on September 25, which is when manager Joe Maddon expects him back. He'll most likely need to be stretched out before returning to the rotation, so it's unclear if he'll start again this season. Even if he does, he can be ignored in most leagues, but as the 24th overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB.com, he can continue to be stashed in dynasty leagues.
