2024 RTSports Outlook

Herbert didn't have quite as big of a season as the previous one, but played well, especially if you consider the injuries the Chargers had along the offensive line and at receiver. Herbert was still eighth overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. He had nine of 17 games with 20-plus fantasy points, showing very good consistency. He had more than 4,700-passing yards and scored 25 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. Herbert had the seventh best bad percentage in football, having bad throws just 12.9 percent of the time. Herbert is the face of the Chargers franchise and should start for years to come. He gets a new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore calling plays for him, which should be a big positive for Herbert. Herbert has it all when it comes to being an elite quarterback. Herbert is a really big quarterback with a strong arm. He can make all the throws and withstand the punishment of the NFL. His accuracy is very good for a young player and he does a great job of making plays down the field. He also can make play with his legs. Herbert is the complete package at quarterback.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Herbert is just hitting his stride and will challenge for the top spot in fantasy quarterback scoring this year. The impact of Moore as his offensive coordinator could be huge. Herbert can get around 5,000-passing yards and 40 total scores with 10 or so interceptions. He will be very consistent all season in his top offense.

After the Los Angeles Chargers traded wide receiver Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night and released Mike Williams this week, they are fully expected to pursue receiving help in the upcoming NFL draft. Allen is the franchise's all-time leading receiver in yards and catches, trailing only tight end Antonio Gates overall. The Chargers hold the fifth overall pick in this year's draft, and the best wideouts available include Ohio State's Marvin Harrison Jr., LSU's Malik Nabers and Washington's Rome Odunze. Harrison is projected to go before pick No. 5. The Bolts' current roster features receivers Joshua Palmer, last year's first-rounder Quentin Johnston, Derius Davis and Simi Fehoko. With Allen, Williams and running back Austin Ekeler all gone, quarterback Justin Herbert will have mostly new offensive weapons around him this fall.

New Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who has a history of leading a run-first offense in the NFL, said he would like the team's offense in 2024 to be balanced. "We want to be a balanced offense," Roman said. "We want to be able to run it when we want to run it and throw it when we want to throw it. If they present looks that are favorable to run it, then we want to be able to run it at a high level." Quarterback Justin Herbert has never had an above-average running game to take pressure off him early in his career, so if Roman and the Chargers can get the ground game going, it's only going to make things easier on the 25-year-old signal-caller. And if the Chargers re-sign impending free-agent running back Austin Ekeler, it could be good news for him as well after a disappointing season in 2023.

Feb 2 5:50pm ET

The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to hire former Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman as their new offensive coordinator, according to league sources. Roman last led Baltimore's offense in 2022 and was new Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh's offensive coordinator with the Niners. The 51-year-old has a reputation of being a run-heavy offensive coordinator, but in Los Angeles he'll inherit one of the better young quarterbacks in the game in Justin Herbert, while starting running back Austin Ekeler heads into unrestricted free agency in March. Still, whoever the Bolts have lined up as their primary running back next season will be intriguing for fantasy purposes with Roman now expected to lead their offense.

Los Angeles Chargers pass-rusher Joey Bosa (foot), who has missed the last four games while on Injured Reserve due to a foot sprain, was at practice on Tuesday working off to the side with a trainer in shorts and a T-shirt. Bosa is eligible to return from Injured Reserve this week, but it remains to be seen if the Bolts will actually open up his 21-day window, let alone officially activate him from IR in time for him to suit up in Week 16 this Saturday against the visiting Buffalo Bills. The oft-injured 28-year-old isn't going to be rushed back at the very least, though, with the Chargers firmly out of playoff contention and having already lost star quarterback Justin Herbert (finger) for the rest of the year. In IDP fantasy leagues, Bosa is still worth stashing, but you're running out of time to use him in 2023.

The Los Angeles Chargers defense is a risky fantasy option in Week 15 despite a good matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. While the Raiders offense doesn't strike fear into the heart of any opposing defenses, the Chargers have struggled on defense lately outside of a strong game against the Patriots in Week 13. With Easton Stick now leading the offense in place of an injured Justin Herbert (finger), we could see a lot of the Chargers defense on the field. There's some sort of upside here, but a very low floor, leaving most fantasy managers likely to find better options on their waiver wires.

Dynasty | Justin Herbert will miss the remainder of the 2023 season following surgery to repair a broken index finger. Dynasty Analysis: The news confirms what was expected and Herbert joins a long list of names now on the shelf for the remainder of the season. Herbert is currently found near the QB10 in fantasy, a disappointment to expectations. The loss of Mike Williams for the season and Josh Palmer for nearly a third of the season proved too much to overcome in the passing game as rookie Quentin Johnston continues to struggle. With only pride remaining to play for in 2023, shutting down Herbert to prepare for 2024 is a wise choice. Five-year veteran backup Easton Stick will take over under center. Herbert is listed as DLF's QB5.

Dynasty | Veteran backup quarterback Easton Stick will take over as the starter for the Chargers in the wake of the news that Justin Herbert will miss the remainder of the season. Dynasty Analysis: A five-year veteran, Stick has appeared in exactly two games over his career and has yet to throw a touchdown or interception. While not an ideal situation for the Chargers, Stick now gets four games to showcase his ability ahead of his 2024 free agent season. Given the need around the NFL for quarterbacks, it's not out of the question that should Stick be able to spark the struggling offense, he could leverage that success into a new contract in 2024 with an outside chance of starting. While seemingly an unlikely event., he'll have every motivation to prepare and perform well. Easton Stick is unranked across all formats at DLF.

Dec 12 12:20pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (finger) will miss the final four regular season games after having surgery to fix the broken index finger on his right hand on Tuesday. Backup Easton Stick will now run LA's offense for the rest of the year, which will be a major downgrade for the rest of the Chargers' offensive skill players in fantasy leagues, mainly receiver Keenan Allen and running back Austin Ekeler. The Chargers are doing what is best for Herbert in the long term with the team sitting at 5-8 and out of the AFC playoff picture. Fantasy managers can safely drop Herbert now in single-year formats and look for a replacement if you don't already have one on roster. Through 14 weeks, Herbert finished as a top-10 fantasy QB with 3,133 passing yards on 456 attempts for 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He's likely going to be working with a new head coach in 2024.

Dec 11 7:50pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (finger) is very likely to undergo surgery on Tuesday to fix his fractured right index finger, according to a source. Whether Herbert will be able to return this year will be determined by the surgery. However, with four games remaining in the regular season and the Chargers out of the playoff picture at 5-8, it's unlikely Herbert will return at this point. He was listed as a non-participant on Monday's injury report and is not going to play on Thursday night in Week 15 against the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders. Fantasy managers that have been using Herbert all year will need to use their backup option or hit the waiver wire moving forward. In LA, Easton Stick is in line to make the first start of his career this week against the Raiders.

Dec 11 12:10pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (finger) is not expected to play on Thursday night against the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15 due to the fractured right index finger he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos. Herbert will be consulting with Dr. Steven Shin to determine the extent of the injury and how much time he will miss, according to a source. The 25-year-old QB already suffered a fractured finger earlier this year, but that was to his left (non-throwing) hand. This one is to the index finger on his throwing hand, which is much more serious for a QB and will put the rest of his season in doubt with only four games remaining. Easton Stick, who replaced Herbert under center in the Week 14 loss, is in line to make his first career start against the Raiders this week, which is obviously a big downgrade for LA's offense.

Dec 11 9:30am ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (finger) sustained a fractured index finger on his throwing hand, which is putting the rest of his season in jeopardy. He'll have an MRI done on the finger today to determine if he's able to come back this season. He will almost certainly not be on the field on Thursday night when the Chargers face off against the Raiders. Given the record for Los Angeles, there's little reason to rush Herbert back. Easton Stick threw for 179 yards in relief duty and would likely get the start in Week 15.

Dynasty | Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert fractured the index finger in his throwing hand in an ugly loss against the Broncos. Dynasty Analysis: And just like that, the Chargers season actually got worse. At 5-8, it's hard to see Los Angeles rushing Herbert back on the field and it's possible he's taken his last snap of the season. It's nearly certain his streak of 62 straight starts is going to end. While Herbert will still be a QB1 this off-season, there are questions about the future of this team and his value moving forward.

Dec 10 8:20pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (finger) didn't return to Sunday's ugly loss to the Denver Broncos. The signal-caller exited halfway through the contest and was listed as questionable. However, the team announced after halftime that Herbert's day was finished. As relayed by NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, head coach Brandon Staley reported that Herbert sustained a fractured right index finger to his throwing hand. As a result, Herbert will likely need more tests to determine his treatment plan. But it's unlikely he'll be on the field on Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders. There's also a chance his season is over, considering the Chargers aren't expected to enter the postseason conversation. If that's the case, Easton Stick, who threw for 179 yards off 13-for-24 passing, may be under center for the rest of the 2023-24 campaign, although his presence may not be good news for Keenan Allen, who's been a top fantasy signal-caller all year.

From RotoBaller

Dec 10 6:20pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (finger) won't return to Sunday's game versus the Denver Broncos. The signal-caller suffered a finger injury on his throwing hand, so he'll finish with 96 yards and an interception off 9-for-17 passing. Easton Stick will be under center for the remainder of the contest, although it's possible he could also be starting on Thursday night against Vegas if Herbert can't suit up.

Dec 10 6:00pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert (finger) is questionable to return to Sunday's matchup with the Denver Broncos. He suffered a finger injury on his throwing hand, although a further update on his status for the rest of Week 14 may not come until after halftime. But if Herbert doesn't return, he'll finish with 96 yards and an interception off 9-for-17 passing. Easton Stick is in for relief, although his presence may not be a good thing for guys like Austin Ekeler and Keenan Allen.

From RotoBaller

Dec 7 4:00pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will look to get back on track in a Week 14 game at home against the Denver Broncos. Herbert is the overall fantasy QB5 this season, but he and the Bolts offense have struggled quite a bit in the past two games, leaving him with just 22 total fantasy points since Week 11. A matchup with the Denver defense isn't ideal, as they've been excellent against opposing quarterbacks since Week 8, allowing the second-lowest passer rating and the fewest passing touchdowns in that span. Still, we've seen what Herbert can do, so he's almost always going to be in the QB1 ranks, but there's certainly a lower floor this week than he usually has.

From RotoBaller

Dec 3 7:20pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert didn't do much in Week 13, but rode the defense to a 6-0 Chargers win. Herbert attempted 37 passes, completing 22 of them for 212 yards. He did not turn the ball over and was not sacked. On the ground, Herbert was credited with four carries, for negative five yards total. The Patriots defense was a challenge, but Herbert and the Chargers should be able to do a little more next week against the Broncos.

From RotoBaller

Nov 30 1:30pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will look to bounce back in a Week 13 game against the New England Patriots. Herbert faced the top-tier Baltimore Ravens defense last week and still put up a somewhat respectable 14 fantasy points, good for a QB15 finish. Week 13 sees him take on another tough defense, but he should have much more room to work than he did in the previous game. While his upside may be a little capped compared to most weeks, Herbert remains an easy QB1 option in all formats.

From RotoBaller

Nov 27 12:40am ET

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert struggled against the Baltimore Ravens defense in a Week 12 20-10 loss. Herbert attempted 44 passes, completing 29 of them for 217 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He added 47 yards on four carries but lost a fumble as well, while taking three sacks for 24 negative yards. As usual, Herbert made some throws that few humans on Earth could make, but play calling was an issue again, as were drops and limited receiving talent beyond Keenan Allen. A matchup against the Patriots in Week 13 should be a little friendlier to Herbert and the rest of the Chargers offense.

From RotoBaller

Nov 26 7:50pm ET

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey (calf) won't play in Sunday's clash with the Los Angeles Chargers. The veteran has been battling a calf injury, keeping him out of the Week 11 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Although he had practiced in a limited capacity throughout the week, he's not ready to return. His next chance to suit up will be in Week 14, after the Ravens' bye. Of course, without Humphrey on the field, Justin Herbert and the rest of the offense could have an easier time finding the end zone.
