The San Francisco 49ers placed wide receiver Tavon Austin (knee) on Injured Reserve on Thursday and activated receiver Richie James Jr. from the active Non-Football Injury list in a corresponding move. In other injury news, general manager John Lynch said that cornerback Jason Verrett injured his hamstring in practice on Wednesday. Center Weston Richburg (knee) will begin the year on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which will keep him out for at least the first six weeks of the season. Austin signed in August due to injuries to Deebo Samuel (foot) and Jalen Hurd (knee), but he'll now miss the entire season. James will be depth behind Samuel, Kendrick Bourne, rookie Brandon Aiyuk, Dante Pettis and Trent Taylor.
San Francisco 49ers WR Tavon Austin (knee) will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list because of a knee injury.
Free-agent WR Tavon Austin (Cowboys) and WR JJ Nelson (Raiders) signed with the San Francisco 49ers Saturday, Aug. 15. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also waived TE Daniel Helm and waived WR Chris X. Thompson (undisclosed) with an injury designation.
Free agents WRs Tavon Austin (Cowboys) and JJ Nelson (Raiders) are expected to sign Friday, Aug. 14, with the San Francisco 49ers, pending results of physicals, per a league source.
Wide receivers JJ Nelson and Tavon Austin are both likely to sign with the San Francisco 49ers, pending physicals. It's not surprising that the team is adding receiver depth with Deebo Samuel (broken foot) out for the start of the year. Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne and Dante Pettis are currently in place to serve as the top receivers for the team to start the year, but the additions of veterans like Nelson and Austin should help give quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo some additional support. Nelson and Austin don't need to be on draft radars at this point as they'll likely see limited snaps in four-receiver sets and gadget plays.
Free-agents WRs Tavon Austin (Cowboys), Donte Moncrief (Panthers) and JJ Nelson (Raiders) worked out for the San Francisco 49ers Thursday, Aug. 13.
Fantasy Spin: Whoever the 49ers sign is likely to only be on the roster until WR Deebo Samuel (foot) returns to full health. Despite some name value with each of these three receivers, they'd be unlikely to make any sort of fantasy impact behind TE George Kittle and WRs Brandon Aiyuk and Kendrick Bourne.
The San Francisco 49ers are bringing free-agent wide receiver Tavon Austin in for a workout. The team is hoping to sign the former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver if the workout goes well. San Francisco is looking to bolster their pass-catching corps after speedy wideout Travis Benjamin opted out of the 2020 season last week. Austin caught 13 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown in 14 games with the Cowboys last season.
Free-agent WR Tavon Austin (Cowboys) is scheduled to work out for the San Francisco 49ers and hopes to sign with the team, according to sources.
