Expect this week to be a little strange as the trading deadline comes at the end of the week. I expect to see 15 to 20 players change uniforms, so many of your players will have the number of games change as the trades happen. Expect to lose a few games because players sit as the general mangers tinker with who to trade. And on the other end, traded players could sit as they travel to their new team.
Some big names are likely to be on the move to get something better than a draft pick for players with expiring contracts, like Trevor Story, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Jesus Aguilar, Starling Marte, Jonathan Schoop, Max Scherzer, Brad Hand, Daniel Bard, just to name a few.
The Rays picked up Nelson Cruz and the Mets added Rich Hill to their beleaguered rotation. The Cruz trade will move Austin Meadows to the outfield, which will cut into the playing time of the Rays other outfielders.
The five teams with only five games this week are Arizona, Cleveland, Miami, St. Louis and Texas. At the other end, the Mets and Braves will be playing eight because of a Monday doubleheader. There are 12 teams playing six games and 11 teams play all seven.
The pickings are pretty slim for free agents pitchers projected to have two starts. In shallow leagues, you might find Dallas Keuchel, Wade Miley or Logan Webb on your waiver wire. In deeper leagues, you could try Mike Manning, Kenyan Middleton, or pick one from the Phillies/Nationals matchup of Spencer Howard against Joe Ross.
If you’re looking down the road, both Red Sox starter Chris Sale and Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas have thrown successful rehab appearances and are getting close to a return. Buy now!
If you were hoping to get the Blue Jays starter Alex Manoah back on Monday and get two starts from him this week, it’s not going happen. The Blue Jays announced he’ll make a rehab start in Florida on Monday instead.
More injury woes for the Dodgers
Mookie Betts has missed the week and he received a cortisone injection Saturday. Now, he won’t be in the lineup Tuesday for the start of their big series with the Giants because he was put on the IL. To make matters worse, the Dodgers lost Cody Bellinger to a hamstring strain, so he’s probably out till Tuesday and a trip to the IL is possible.
Help is on the way
Finally, the White Sox get Eloy Jimenez back this week. Get him in your lineup.
New ace in the making
Mets rookie starter Tylor Megill dazzled this week with a two-hit gem against the heavy hitting Toronto Blue Jay lineup. Six innings, five strikeouts, one walk was very impressive. In 30 innings, he has 35 strikeouts and a 2.10 ERA. Get him if you can.
