Manny Machado hit a three-run double and Yu Darvish fired five scoreless innings in his return from the injured list as the San Diego Padres snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-4 win over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

Darvish (1-1) allowed three hits and didn't issue a walk, striking out three in his first outing since April 14. He had been sidelined due to a neck injury.

After throwing 50 of his 70 pitches for strikes, Darvish left with a 5-0 lead after San Diego reached Nick Martinez (0-2) for four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The big hit came from Machado, who doubled on a high sinker from Martinez to make it 4-0. It came after Cincinnati's Luke Maile was called for catcher interference during Jake Cronenworth's at-bat, loading the bases. Machado later scored when Reds left fielder Spencer Steer dropped a fly ball that he seemingly lost in the lights.

The Reds got back into the game against the Padres' bullpen. Jonathan India got Cincinnati on the board in the sixth with a two-run single that scored Elly De La Cruz and Steer to cut the deficit to 5-2.

After Fernando Tatis Jr. brought home a run with a fielder's-choice grounder in the San Diego sixth, Cincinnati pulled within two runs on solo homers by Jeimer Candelario and Stuart Fairchild in the seventh. Candelario logged his third long ball of the year on a deep fly into the right field seats, and Fairchild notched his first with a 407-foot blast to center.

San Diego reliever Yuki Matsui came on and retired all five batters he faced to get the game to Robert Suarez. The hard-throwing closer mowed the Reds down in order in the ninth to collect his 10th save of the year.

Cronenworth put the Padres ahead 1-0 in the third with an RBI single to right that scored Tatis, who had doubled with one out.

Martinez, who pitched for San Diego in 2022 and 2023, gave up six hits and five runs (three earned) in five innings. He issued a walk and fanned three.
