Spring training roundup: Late HR lifts Blue Jays over Canada

Riley Tirotta belted a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning to propel the Toronto Blue Jays to a 10-7 victory over Canada's national team on Tuesday in a World Baseball Classic tune-up game in Dunedin, Fla.

Jesus Sanchez had two hits and drove in three runs, and Nathan Lukes added a two-run single as part of a five-run second inning for the Blue Jays.

Jacob Robson launched a solo homer as part of a four-run eighth inning for Canada, which completed a comeback from an early 7-0 deficit before Tirotta's blast put Toronto ahead.

Canada will square off against Philadelphia on Wednesday before opening its World Baseball Classic slate on Saturday against Colombia in San Juan, Puerto Rico.


Netherlands 8, Orioles 5

Ceddanne Rafaela cracked a three-run homer in the second inning and a two-run double in the third to pace the Netherlands past Baltimore in Sarasota, Fla.

Ray-Patrick Didder launched a solo homer in the first inning to highlight his three-hit, three-run performance. Ozzie Albies also went deep in the second inning for the Netherlands.

Pete Alonso continued his strong spring by belting a solo homer in the first inning and Jeremiah Jackson also went deep for the Orioles.

Yankees 11, Panama 1 (8)

J.C. Escarra hit a two-run homer to right-center field in the fifth inning to lift New York to a rout of Panama in Tampa, Fla.

Ryan McMahon had a two-run single in the first inning, Kenedy Corona had two hits and two runs and Escarra added a sacrifice fly to pace the Yankees.

Ruben Tejada had an RBI groundout in the eighth inning for Panama.

Mets 6, Nicaragua 3

Vidal Brujan ripped a two-run single in the sixth inning to fuel New York to victory in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Chris Suero added a solo homer in the eighth inning for the Mets, who saw newcomer Bo Bichette open the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first.

Freddy Zamora and Brandon Leyton each launched a solo homer for Nicaragua. Zamora added a second RBI on a sac fly.

Pirates 7, Colombia 1

Jake Mangum drove in a pair of runs on two hits to pace Pittsburgh to victory in Bradenton, Fla.

Konnor Griffin and Jhostynxon Garcia each ripped an RBI double for the Pirates, who pounded out 11 hits.

Jesus Castillo had an RBI double in the ninth inning for Colombia to break up the shutout bid.

Israel 1, Marlins 0

Garrett Stubbs hit an RBI triple to plate Cole Carrigg in the fourth inning to lead Israel over Miami in Jupiter, Fla.

Carrigg joined Benjamin Rosengard with a hit and Robert Stock struck out three batters over three scoreless innings for Israel.

The Marlins mustered just four hits but committed two costly errors.

Rays (ss) 5, Twins 2

Chandler Simpson had an RBI single to ignite a five-run first inning, fueling a split-squad Tampa Bay team past Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla.

Logan Davidson, Jacob Melton and Xavier Isaac each had an RBI single during the inning for the Rays, who finished with eight hits.

Royce Lewis plated Brooks Lee on a pair of sacrifice flies for the Twins.

Rays (ss) 3, Phillies 1

Ryan Vilade collected two hits and scored one run as Tampa Bay defeated Philadelphia in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Vilade scored on Taylor Walls' RBI single in the second inning for the Rays, who scored a run in each of the first three innings.

Jose Rodriguez had an RBI single in the fifth inning for the Phillies, who fell to 3-7-1 in spring training.
