San Diego Padres outfielder Ramon Laureano was placed on the 60-day injured list Friday, with the expectation being that he'll miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery for a torn labrum in his right hip.

It's a further blow for a San Diego team which ranked last in the majors in batting average (.216) and runs (235) entering Friday's action.

Laureano, who had been playing through soreness, was hitting a career-worst .203 with seven home runs and 21 RBIs in 53 games this season.

"It's a big loss," Padres manager Craig Stammen said Friday. "It was a guy we were counting on a lot coming into the season, and the guy that we had batting leadoff for a while. He's been in a little bit of (an offensive) funk lately. Maybe that's a reason for it, but unfortunate that he had to go have surgery and have it taken care of."

He's the second outfielder San Diego has lost this week, albeit for differing reasons. The Padres formally released the struggling Nick Castellanos on Friday after designating him for assignment earlier this week.

Laureano, 31, has a .236 average with 16 homers in 103 games with the Padres over the last two seasons. He's posted a career .250 batting average with 113 homers and 349 RBIs with the Athletics (2018-23), Cleveland Guardians (2023-24), Atlanta Braves (2024), Orioles (2025) and Padres.

This could bring Laureano's tenure in San Diego to a conclusion. After he was acquired last season at the trade deadline from Baltimore, he's a pending free agent at the end of the season.
