2024 RTSports Outlook

Woods got some chances his rookie year in a reserve role and made some big plays. He had 25 receptions for 312 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 12.5 yards per reception. He showed some big-play ability. Woods will challenge for the starting job for the Colts this year. He has a lot of similar players to compete with for playing time. Woods is a good athlete with good size and strength. He is an improving blocker and receiver that is just coming into his own. Woods can be very tough after the catch because of his size and speed. He remains a bit raw, though, so inconsistency can be a problem.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Woods might be worth a spot play if he is getting consistent playing time. He might have a few big games along the way. He could get around 35 receptions for 450 yards and a few scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

At 6-foot-7, 253 pounds, Indianapolis Colts tight endJelani Woods (hamstring) has the size, athleticism, and tools to be an elite playmaker in the NFL. After being selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, he showed flashes of that potential in his rookie season. Woods had 25 catches for 312 yards and three touchdowns in 2022. His best game came in Week 12 against the Steelers, when he had an impressive nine-catch, 98-yard performance (both career-highs). Woods also had a two-touchdown game earlier in Week 3. The rookie wasn't fantasy-relevant last season and averaged 4.95 PPR fantasy points. But he also had two top-five tight end finishes in 2022, showing his potential at the position in the future. Woods could have a breakout year this season, but it might take a lot of work to bank on with a potential rookie quarterback in Anthony Richardson under center. The tight end will also begin the season on the injured reserve with a hamstring injury, missing at least the year's first four games. He's the 29th tight end off the board on RotoBaller and is mainly an option in deep-league formats.

The Athletic's James Boyd has Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods projected as the team's starting tight end in May because he remains bullish on his potential, despite the fact he was sidelined all of last year due to hamstring injuries. Woods should be healthy for organized team activities, and his next-level athleticism will mesh perfectly with head coach Shane Steichen's play-calling to create mismatches all over the field. He's also big enough to block when needed, and Kylen Granson can continue to use his speed and route-running to help move the chains. Mo Alie-Cox will remain in the mix as a seasoned veteran. While Woods should have a bigger pass-catching role if he can stay on the field, this could once again be a frustrating committee situation at TE for fantasy managers.

The Indianapolis Colts can't commit to tight end Jelani Woods (hamstring) being able to return this season. Woods has had multiple hamstring injuries since training camp and hasn't appeared in a game in 2023. The 25-year-old caught 25 passes on 40 targets for 312 yards and three touchdowns as part of a committee approach at tight end in Indy in his rookie campaign, but he hasn't been able to contribute at all this year because of his hamstring injuries. Without Woods in the fold, the Colts continue to employ a committee approach among Kylen Granson, Drew Ogletree, Mo Alie-Cox and Will Mallory. Granson probably has the most upside of the bunch, but fantasy managers should be avoiding this TE situation at all costs.
