Wolford was on the practice squad of the Bucs much of the season, serving as the No. 3 quarterback for the team. He did not get in a game. Wolford will look to earn a top backup job this year but will likely remain in the same role with the Bucs. He has served the backup role pretty well in the past. Wolford is a small quarterback but moves around the pocket well and does a good job of making plays on the run. He lacks a little arm strength but is pretty accurate and does well at hitting his receivers in stride. Wolford also is a solid runner, doing well at extending the play to either make a big play down the field or run with the ball.
FANTASY OUTLOOK: Wolford has not done a lot with past chances, so he is a stretch for fantasy teams even if pressed into a starting role once again.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Tyrek Funderburk, an undrafted rookie free agent out of Appalachian State, picked off quarterback Kyle Trask on the first day of mandatory minicamp this month and had a second interception on Day 2 off quarterback John Wolford. "He's a guy that's flashed out of pads," head coach Todd Bowles said. Funderburk still has a ways to go before we're talking about him for a 53-man roster spot, but he'll be a name to watch from Tampa's secondary once the pads come on at training camp at the end of July. It wouldn't be the first time the Bucs hit on an undrafted defensive back, though, as cornerback Christian Izien started as the team's nickel corner in 2023 after going undrafted. Pass-rusher Markees Watts and receiver Rakim Jarrett are also former undrafted free agents that remain on the Bucs' roster.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with free-agent quarterback John Wolford, according to Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht. Wolford will return to Tampa after spending the end of last season on the team's practice squad. The 28-year-old didn't actually appear in a game in the NFL in 2023. The Wake Forest alum entered the league in 2020 with the Los Angeles Rams and has appeared in all seven of his games (four starts) in LA. Over that time, he's gone 61-for-104 (58.7 completion percentage) for 626 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions. Wolford will strictly operate as quarterback depth for the Bucs in 2024 behind starter Baker Mayfield and backup Kyle Trask.
