Los Angeles Chargers WR DJ Chark Jr. (undisclosed) was not on the field during the media access portion of practice Monday, Sept. 2.

Sep 2 7:30pm ET

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver DJ Chark (hip) was not seen at the period of practice on Monday that was open to the media. It's no concerning that Chark hasn't practiced at all for the last two weeks with the Chargers due to a hip injury. There's a chance Chark was limited in practice on Monday after reporters left, but we'll have a better idea of his status heading into the Week 1 regular-season opener this Sunday against the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders when the Bolts post their first official injury report on Wednesday. When healthy, the 27-year-old is expected to start in three-wide sets in 2024 in his first year in LA alongside Joshua Palmer and rookie Ladd McConkey. Especially considering his injury, Chark has been going undrafted in standard 12-team leagues. If he's limited or out this Sunday, former first-rounder Quentin Johnston would enter the starting lineup against Vegas.

Los Angeles Chargers running back Gus Edwards did not register a touch in his first preseason with the team. This was likely due to his veteran status and familiarity with Greg Roman's offensive system. Letting Edwards rest not only preserved his health but also gave additional opportunities to running backs with far less job security. It should be noted that J.K. Dobbins was also held out of the preseason. Both backs are listed jointly at the No. 1 spot on the Chargers' depth chart. There were suspicions a few months ago that Edwards would be the lead back, but it appears to be heading toward more of a true split. Los Angeles may certainly decide to just ride the hot hand in 2024. As long as both are healthy, Dobbins and Edwards are nothing more than RB3/FLEX plays.

Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins did not register a touch in his first preseason with the team. This was likely due to his veteran status, familiarity with Greg Roman's offensive system, and an extensive injury history that the Chargers' didn't want to add to before he takes his first regular season snap. After all, Los Angeles wants its top running backs healthy and ready to go for Week 1. It should be noted that Gus Edwards was also held out of the preseason. Both backs are listed jointly at the No. 1 spot on the Chargers' depth chart. There were suspicions a few months ago that Edwards would be the lead back, but it appears to be heading toward more of a true split. Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey caught one pass for five yards during his first NFL preseason. It was a relatively quiet stretch of games for the rookie receiver as he competes for an impactful role in the Chargers' offense. Nevertheless, he formed a strong rapport with Los Angeles' quarterbacks during camp and also showed real promise as a blocker throughout the preseason. These factors alone should be enough to help him push for the No. 2 receiver role to open the year. Joshua Palmer figures to secure the No. 1 job, so McConkey's main competition is Quentin Johnston, who underwhelmed as a rookie last year but has reportedly impressed the Chargers' new coaching staff this summer. McConkey should be treated as a late-round depth piece in most fantasy leagues given that we don't exactly know what his role will look like this year.

The Athletic's Daniel Popper thinks that if all the Los Angeles Chargers wide receivers stay healthy this year, Joshua Palmer will lead the team in targets. Palmer is the returning player with the most targets, receptions, yards and touchdowns from quarterback Justin Herbert. He's also the fourth-most targeted receiver in Herbert's career, behind Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler. Palmer has earned Herbert's trust in his first three years in the NFL, and Popper thinks trust will be especially important in the early going in 2024 after Herbert missed three weeks of training camp with a plantar-fascia injury. In addition, the Bolts have installed a new offense under coordinator Greg Roman. Palmer has upside this year, but he's mainly a WR5/flex because of the fact that he hasn't been able to stay healthy. He missed six games in 2023 with a knee injury and also battled an ankle injury and a concussion in 2022.

The Los Angeles Chargers have signed free agent running back Jaret Patterson to their practice squad. He had been released from the 53-man roster earlier in the week but is now back in the building. The 24-year-old registered 339 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie in 2021, but his production has scaled back since then and he didn't even register a touch last year. He's merely a depth option behind the four running backs on the Chargers' active roster and therefore isn't expected to see the field much in 2024.

Woods (Commanders) worked out for the New York Giants Thursday, Aug. 29.

The Los Angeles Chargers released running back Isaiah Spiller from their practice squad on Friday, according to a source. Spiller missed out on making the 53-man roster out of training camp and has now been pushed off the team entirely after the club claimed RB Hassan Haskins off waivers from the Tennessee Titans earlier this week. The 23-year-old wasn't able to win one of the last RB spots over rookie Kimani Vidal and will now be free to join any team in the league as RB depth. Spiller failed to make an impact with the Bolts after they drafted him in the fourth round (123rd overall) in 2022 out of Texas A&M. In his first two years in the league, he carried the ball 55 times for 137 yards (2.5 yards per carry) and no touchdowns, adding only nine receptions (nine targets) for 47 yards without a touchdown in 15 games (zero starts).

Los Angeles Chargers running back Jaret Patterson has been released by the organization on Thursday. This is a tough break for Patterson who was trying to catch on as a backup in camp. The organization decided to go a different route by claiming fellow back Hassan Haskins off waivers on Wednesday. They also decided to keep sixth-round pick Kimani Vidal who impressed them in camp. Patterson really hasn't done anything since his rookie season in 2021. He ran for 266 yards and scored two touchdowns in 17 games with the Washington Commanders that season. He'll look to catch on as depth elsewhere, but Patterson probably won't have fantasy value on any roster.

Dynasty | The Falcons have traded quarterback Taylor Heinicke to the Los Angeles Chargers. Dynasty Analysis: Heinicke was likely deemed expendable months ago after the Falcons shockingly took Michael Penix Jr early in the NFL Draft. He should have the inside track to back up Justin Herbert and could push Easton Stick either to the QB3 spot or even off the roster. This is a decent landing spot for Heinicke, who has proven to be effective as a spot starter but far from a player to build a team around. He's off the dynasty radar, despite the positive move from Atlanta to LA.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Aug 28 8:30pm ET

The Los Angeles Chargers are acquiring quarterback Taylor Heinicke from the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday in exchange for a conditional sixth-round draft pick. Not only is starting quarterback Justin Herbert (foot) recovering from plantar fasciitis in his foot, but backup Easton Stick regressed in training camp and the preseason. The 31-year-old Heinicke will be an upgrade at the QB position behind Herbert entering the regular season next week. In Atlanta, the Falcons were expected all along to try and trade Heinicke after taking rookie Michael Penix Jr. in the first round in April. Heinicke made his NFL debut back in 2017 with the Houston Texans and has appeared in 38 games (29 starts) since then with four different teams. His best year came in 2021 with Washington, when he threw for 3,419 yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 picks on 321 pass attempts over 16 games (15 starts).

The Los Angeles Chargers claimed running back Hassan Haskins off waivers from the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday, according to the league's transaction wire. The former Michigan product wasn't able to make the Titans' 53-man roster out of training camp and will now join the Bolts for the 2024 campaign, most likely starting on the practice squad. In LA, Haskins will provide extra RB depth behind Gus Edwards, J.K. Dobbins, Jaret Patterson and rookie Kimani Vidal. The 24-year-old former fourth-round selection in 2022 missed all of last season due to an upper-body injury after seeing 25 carries his rookie season that he turned into 93 scoreless yards in 15 games (one start). He also caught 11 passes for 57 yards in 2022. Haskins remains well off the fantasy radar for the time being.

Aug 27 7:50pm ET

The Los Angeles Chargers announced on Tuesday that rookie wide receiver Brenden Rice and safeties Tony Jefferson and JT Woods were among the players that made the final 53-man roster heading into the 2024 regular season. Rice made the final cut after impressive during training camp and the preseason. The 22-year-old son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice was taken in the seventh round of April's NFL draft out of USC. He might be worth stashing in deep dynasty/keeper leagues, but for his rookie season, he'll merely be a depth option for the Bolts behind Joshua Palmer, DJ Chark, rookie Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, Simi Fehoko and Derius Davis. Rice excels with his route-running and also plays with a physical style on contested catches down the field. Initially, he might be a red-zone weapon for a new-look Chargers offense in 2024.

Dynasty | The Chargers have released running back Isaiah Spiller. Dynasty Analysis: Spiller was once a highly touted dynasty prospect but fell hard in the NFL Draft and was never able to make much of an impression with the Chargers. He may have a hard time finding work out there since there isn't a lot of great tape on him out there. At this point, Spiller can be dropped in even the deepest of leagues.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Aug 27 2:00pm ET

The Los Angeles Chargers released running back Isaiah Spiller on Tuesday, according to a source. Spiller, who was a former fourth-round pick in 2022 out of Texas A&M, lost out on the competition as backfield depth behind Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins to the likes of rookie Kimani Vidal, Jaret Patterson and Elijah Dotson. The 23-year-old should be able to latch on with another team before the start of the 2024 regular season, though, as backfield depth. In his two seasons with the Bolts, Spiller underperformed to the tune of a weak 2.5 yards per carry while gaining 137 rushing yards and no touchdowns on 55 carries. He also caught all nine of his targets in the passing game for 47 yards but wasn't able to find the end zone. Last year, Spiller had 37 carries for 96 rushing yards, adding 34 receiving yards on his six receptions.

Los Angeles Chargers backup quarterback Easton Stick has very little job security as the preseason wraps up, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic. While Popper projects that Stick will make the team's initial 53-man roster, he notes that the Chargers could look to upgrade the backup quarterback role by signing someone who is cut by another team when rosters trim down on Tuesday. Los Angeles previously signed Luis Perez to compete with Stick, and while Perez likely didn't do enough to win a roster spot, all signs point to the Chargers seeking an upgrade over Stick. Of course, this news has minimal fantasy football implications as Justin Herbert is the Chargers' starting quarterback and has an incredibly firm hold on his job. He ranks as a fringe top-12 fantasy quarterback heading into the 2024 campaign.

From RotoBaller

Aug 25 9:00am ET

Daniel Popper of The Athletic projects that Los Angeles Chargers running back Kimani Vidal will make the roster and be listed third on the depth chart behind Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins. The competition for the third running back slot appeared to be wide open heading into the Chargers' final preseason game, with Vidal, Jaret Patterson, and Isaiah Spiller all competing for the role. Vidal didn't play in the preseason finale, which could suggest that he's already locked up a roster spot. The rookie led the team in rushing yards during Week 2 of the preseason, and he also caught two passes. Even if Vidal is confirmed as the Chargers' No. 3 running back, he should be avoided in fantasy football given his depth role behind Edwards and Dobbins.
