Dallas Cowboys running back Dalvin Cook was not elevated from the practice squad ahead of Sunday's game versus the Cleveland Browns. As a result, he won't play in Week 1. This backfield belongs to some combination of Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle, and with Cook off the roster, Deuce Vaughn will operate as the No. 3 running back. Elliott and Dowdle are the only Cowboys backs on the fantasy roster; they are both RB3/FLEX options.

Veteran running back Dalvin Cook signed with the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad on Wednesday and is eager to contribute in any way he can to the team's offense in 2024. "Obviously I feel like this is a great opportunity for me to come in and help a great organization to win football games," Cook said. "And as I look around and I look at the running back room, it's a bunch of guys that I can go in there and run the football with. Although he has plenty of experience as a bell-cow RB in the NFL -- he averaged 18.5 carries per game in his last four seasons with the Vikings from 2019-22 -- but he started just one game with the New York Jets in 2023 and had 67 carries for 214 yards rushing. Cook's first goal is to work his way up to the active roster from the practice squad to eventually add depth alongside Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle. Dallas also has second-year back Deuce Vaughn, so Cook will be part of a committee if/when he joins the active roster.

Dallas Cowboys running back Dalvin Cook believes he still has gas left in the tank. After finishing 2022 by running for his fourth-consecutive season of at least 1,000 yards, the 29-year-old didn't do much during his time with the Jets and Ravens in 2023-24. However, Cook feels he's still one of the best running backs in the NFL and attributes his struggles last season to the Achilles injury suffered by Aaron Rodgers. "I don't really want to speak on the situation, but when Aaron went down on Play 4, everything was just a little bit different," Cook said during an interview. "When I got to Baltimore, I was ready to go. I was ready to get the ball however many times they needed me to. Unfortunately, I didn't get it that much." While the Cowboys' backfield features Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle, it's anyone's guess how impactful the duo can be. If things get out of hand from a rushing standpoint, there's room for Cook to take over as the No. 1 option on the depth chart. If that happens, he'll immediately draw attention from fantasy managers, so drafting him as a late-round stash wouldn't be a bad idea.

Dynasty | The Cowboys have signed running back Dalvin Cook. Dynasty Analysis: Well, that didn't take long. Cook visited the facility today and signed shortly thereafter. His signing is one of those that could be good in reality but a mess in fantasy. At this point, Dallas looks to be going with some kind of committee that features Cook, Ezekiel Elliott, and Rico Dowdle. Cook is certainly worth an add to a dynasty roster but he's going to need to show he has some juice left to be trusted in lineups moving forward.

Four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook signed with the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday, according to his agency. It's a big addition to a Cowboys backfield that currently has veteran Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle listed as co-starters. Cook will start his tenure with Dallas on the practice squad and will need to work his way to the active roster after missing all of training camp and the preseason while on the open market. It means the 29-year-old won't immediately challenge for a substantial role in Dallas' backfield and he may not even be active in Week 1. The 29-year-old was coming off injury in 2023 and averaged a meager 3.2 yards per carry with the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens. However, he's had a fully healthy offseason and enters a RB picture with plenty of opportunity. At best, Cook will a late-round flier in very deep fantasy leagues to begin 2024.

Free-agent RB Dalvin Cook (Ravens) agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Fantasy Spin: Cook is 29 and just two years removed from a 1,173-yard campaign when he rushed for 4.4 YPC in 2022. He could still be a factor, and let's face it, Zeke Elliott and Rico Dowdle aren't really imposing threats ahead of him. Grab him in deep leagues and keep him on the watch list otherwise.

Dynasty | The Dallas Cowboys have cut running back Royce Freeman. Dynasty Analysis: Freeman looked to have an inside track at a job but ended up being cut along with Malik Davis in favor of both Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn. With Dalvin Cook also a possibility of being signed after his visit this week, this depth chart looks like a bit of a mess. Freeman is starting to run out of chances, despite performing relatively well when he's had chances.

Dynasty | The Dallas Cowboys are bringing in free agent running back Dalvin Cook for a visit. Dynasty Analysis: Cook was famously signed as a free agent by the Jets last year, only to hardly ever see the field, He had a brief stint with the Ravens after being released by New York but failed to make an impact there, either. It's possible the former Viking is simply cooked but Dallas will attempt to see if he has anything left in the tank. His addition would muddy an already convoluted depth chart that features Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, and a host of others. Stay tuned.

Aug 26 9:20pm ET

Four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook is flying to Dallas on Monday night for a visit with the Cowboys, according to sources. Unlike a year ago when Cook was rehabbing from shoulder surgery, he has been hitting the weights all offseason and said he feels the best he has in years. Cook looked washed up in his time with the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens last year, but the Cowboys are going to take a look as they attempt to bolster their backfield depth with the regular season less than two weeks away. The 29-year-old averaged just 3.2 yards per carry on 67 attempts, gaining 214 scoreless yards. He also added 15 catches for 78 yards. Cook could be more productive with better health in 2024, but even if he signs with Dallas, he'll be too far down the depth chart to be much of a fantasy option to begin the year. As things stand now, Ezekiel Elliott, Rico Dowdle, Royce Freeman and Deuce Vaughn are their top four RBs.

The Dallas Cowboys could have running backs Miles Sanders and Dalvin Cook on their short list of targets as the regular season gets closer, according to Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. The insiders note that the Cowboys are still evaluating their backfield, which is currently headlined by Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle, and have started monitoring a few external options in case they feel the need to make an addition. Sanders is one of those players, and there's also a connection with Cook, who previously expressed interest in playing for the Cowboys. The latter is currently a more feasible option than the former given that Sanders is still under contract with the Panthers, but there's been speculation that he could be on Carolina's roster bubble. If the Cowboys do make a move at running back, it would add another confusing element for fantasy managers to decipher. Elliott, Dowdle, and the addition would presumably all be thrust to the low-end RB3 range while we try to figure out each back's expected usage.

Dynasty | Running back Dalvin Cook remains unsigned. Dynasty Analysis: Cook spent time with the Jets and Ravens last year but didn't make an impact for either team. This was pretty unforeseen as he was coming off a solid 2022 featuring his fourth straight 1,000-yard season with Minnesota. It seems Father Time may have caught up with Cook but it still seems unlikely he doesn't find a new home somewhere. Teams like the Bengals, Browns, Broncos. Raiders, Cowboys, Giants, and Commanders all have varying needs at the position and could have interest in the coming weeks and months. At this point, Cook looks like a roster clogger in dynasty leagues.

May 23 7:00pm ET

Free-agent running back Dalvin Cook said he's "ready to roll" and would like to find a new team before training camp this summer to avoid his struggles in 2023. Cook, the former Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowl RB, signed with the New York Jets in mid-August last year and never got off the ground. He had just 67 carries for 214 yards in 15 games with the Jets before ultimately landing on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad before taking part in the Divisional Round win over the Houston Texans. The 28-year-old was coming off surgery last year and looked sluggish, averaging a career-worst 3.2 yards per carry. "I feel great, man," Cook said. He should be able to latch on with a team for some veteran depth at the position in the next month or two, but at this point in his career, he's facing an uphill battle to regain any kind of fantasy relevance.
