2024 RTSports Outlook

Pickett did not take a step forward last year, having some struggles. He got hurt in Week 13 and didn't return to the starting lineup despite being healthy enough to play late in the year. Pickett had just six passing touchdowns in 12 games. He really struggled to find the end zone. And Pickett had some real accuracy issues, finishing fifth overall in bad throw percentage (18.4 percent). He also had the third-worst on-target percentage (71.6 percent), missing on a lot of throws. He has 13 interceptions to 13-passing touchdowns in two seasons. Pickett is a pretty accurate pocket passer that does a good job of reading defenses and making plays. He lacks a huge arm compared to some of the other young quarterbacks in the league, though. He is not afraid to make plays with his legs but isn't near the level of other rushing quarterbacks. Pickett will force some throws and turn the ball over too much at this stage of his career. He will move to a backup role this season, playing behind Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Pickett has shown little to date for fantasy teams so even if he happens to find his way into the starting lineup once again, he probably won't be a huge help to fantasy teams.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Kenny Pickett joined the organization after spending just two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The University of Pittsburgh product posted 4,474 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 25 games for the Steelers after being selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Needless to say, the Steelers gave up on him quickly and dealt him for mid-round pick swaps. Now in Philadelphia, the 26-year-old is embracing the change of scenery. "Change is a great thing," Pickett said. "I'm going through it right now. I was in Pittsburgh for seven years, and now I'm over in Philadelphia. I think a lot of people probably have some negative views on change, but that's really just your outlook on it. I think if you keep a positive mindset, it'll all work out for the better." While taking a step back could be a good thing for Pickett's career, he's unlikely to see any playing time anytime soon barring an injury to Jalen Hurts. That said, he could be an intriguing bench stash in two-QB and superflex leagues due to the offensive weaponry and offensive line the Eagles possess.

Dynasty | The Chicago Bears have traded Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a conditional draft choice. Dynasty Analysis: The conditional sixth round pick could become a fourth round pick depending on just how much time Fields get on the, well, field. Pittsburgh entered the week with Kenny Pickett as their starter and ended the week with Russell Wilson playing on a minimum contract and Fields as his backup for what amounts to pocket change. When you consider what the Steelers got back from the Eagles for Pickett, it looks like highway robbery. Regardless, Fields should slot in as Wilson's backup and be ready to take over should Russ fail to cook next season. Wilson is also on a one year deal so the Steelers will take 2023 to heavily evaluate both players. As for his dynasty value, this is tragic for Fields. He's still roster worthy but he's also likely going to be just taking up a roster spot for some time now.

Dynasty | The Steelers have traded quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles. Dynasty Analysis: And that ends the shortest "quarterback competition" in Pittsburgh history. The Steelers will receive a 2024 third round pick (No. 98) and two 2025 seventh round picks in exchange for Pickett and a 2024 fourth round pick (No. 120). There was talk this off-season indicating the Steelers were willing to give Pickett a second chance at the starting job but even after locking up Russell Wilson for just one season, they decided to throw in the (terrible) towel. Pickett will back up Jalen Hurts and be one injury away from relevance. However, he's going to be tough to use a roster spot on in a non-superflex format this upcoming season and his ranking is going to plummet now. At least we know who the Phlilly fans will be chanting for if Hurts struggles for more than one series.

The Philadelphia Eagles are acquiring quarterback Kenny Pickett from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday in a pick swap, according to sources. It's unclear as of right now what draft picks are involved. Pickett, who opened last year as the Steelers' starting quarterback before getting hurt and losing the job to Mason Rudolph, preferred to move on after the team signed veteran QB Russell Wilson to a one-year deal this week in free agency. Pickett was likely to back up Wilson in 2024, but instead he'll be the backup for Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia with a move to the NFC. The 25-year-old former 20th overall pick out of Pitt in 2022 has looked like more of a backup in the NFL than a starter in his two years in the league, and this move certainly is a hit to his dynasty/keeper value moving forward.

Dynasty | The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing quarterback Russell Wilson to likely replace Kenny Pickett as their starter. Dynasty Analysis: There was talk over the past couple of weeks indicating the Steelers were ready to give Pickett a second chance to be their long-term answer but that doesn't look like it will happen this season. Wilson is only going to be on a short-term deal but this just doesn't exactly look like a vote of confidence for Pickett's future in Steel City. His dynasty ADP is going to plummet and he's going to be a very tough hold unless he somehow beats Wilson out this preseason.

Dynasty | Reports are now circulating that Russell Wilson will indeed meet with the Steelers prior to the beginning of free agency. Dynasty Analysis: There were reports earlier in the week indicating Pittsburgh had no interest but it now seems those may have been false. Pittsburgh has been the leader in the clubhouse to sign Wilson since Denver announced their intention to release him last week so this comes as no surprise. While nothing is imminent, the fit just seems too perfect to not make sense to at least explore. Wilson wants to be on a contender, Pittsburgh has a loaded offense, Head Coach Mike Tomlin has long been a fan of Russ, and Kenny Pickett has not looked like the long-term answer. We'll see what happens but this would be a solid marriage should it come to fruition.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have started the process of rebuilding third-year quarterback Kenny Pickett, and sources say that new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith recently spent time with Pickett in South Florida, and that the two had a "great" meeting. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the sentiment at last week's NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, including some with the Steelers, was that Pickett could get another chance after a disastrous 2023 due in part to the offense's overall struggles under then-offensive coordinator Matt Canada. Smith could help maximize Pickett's skill set, but there's little doubt Pittsburgh will bring in competition for Pickett, which could mean a Mason Rudolph re-signing. The Steelers have also been mentioned as a possibility to trade for Bears QB Justin Fields, which would be even worse news for Pickett.

Feb 29 6:20pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan said that he has "full faith" in quarterback Kenny Pickett. Pickett, a former first-round pick, hasn't looked good in his first two NFL seasons, but lacking other options on their current roster, the Steelers are crossing their fingers that the 25-year-old can make improvements this offseason and earn the starting gig this summer in training camp. It doesn't mean that they won't look to re-sign Mason Rudolph or bring in another veteran in free agency to push Pickett for the starting gig, though. In 25 games (24 starts) since his rookie season in 2022, Pickett has completed only 62.6% of his pass attempts for 4,474 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Not only was Pickett hurt in 2023, but he was also benched in favor of Rudolph late in the year. Unless he makes a drastic improvement in Year 3, Pickett might not be long for Pittsburgh.

Feb 17 1:20pm ET

The Pittsburgh Steelers will head into the 2024 season with the idea that quarterback Kenny Pickett, who has gone 14-10 so far, will be their No. 1 QB. However, they also won't go in with the same hope they had this time last year when they were encouraged by how Pickett finished his rookie season in 2022. There actually seems to be internal division that Mason Rudolph should be the starter after the way he finished last year by winning the final three regular season games to get the team into the playoffs. The problem is that Rudolph is an unrestricted free agent and may not return. The Steelers' priority is to bring Rudolph back, which would create an open competition between him and Pickett in training camp this summer. Barring some drastic improvement from Pickett this offseason, both QBs appear to be game-manager types, making him low-upside QB options in fantasy.

From RotoBaller

Jan 18 12:50pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that quarterback Kenny Pickett will return as the team's starter next season but will definitely have competition. The Steelers want Mason Rudolph to provide the competition for Pickett, but "he's a free agent." Pickett was mostly underwhelming in his 12 starts in 2023 before injuring his ankle in Week 13 and never playing again the rest of the year as Rudolph eventually took over and led the team to three straight wins to close out the regular season to help the team clinch a playoff spot. Since being taken in the first round in 2022, the 25-year-old Pickett has completed only 62.6% of his pass attempts for 4,474 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 25 games (24 starts). He's going to have to play a lot better during training camp and the preseason to beat out Rudolph or whoever the Steelers bring in to compete with him.
