2024 RTSports Outlook

The Steelers picked Wilson in the third round of this year's draft, adding some much needed firepower at the receiver spot. Wilson is a speed burner and top deep threat at the position. He can run by defenders in a hurry. He is a bit of a one-dimensional player at this stage of his career and will need to improve his route tree to be a more complete receiver. He also lacks a little elusiveness, especially if you consider his game-changing speed. Wilson could challenge to start right away opposite George Pickens.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Wilson is an intriguing rookie receiver for the coming year. He has a pretty high weekly ceiling because of his big-game ability. He probably will be a frustrating fantasy play, though, because his catch totals might not be great in year one. He could get around 50 receptions for 750 yards and a few scores.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Many were surprised during the 2024 NFL Draft when Michigan WR Roman Wilson slipped to the Third Round (No. 84 overall), but he landed in a good spot with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who know a thing or two about drafting WRs on Day 2 of the draft. After WR Diontae Johnson was traded to Carolina, a huge void opened up in the Steelers pass-catching corps alongside WR George Pickens. While there are still some questions about Pittsburgh's QB situation, they've given themselves options with veteran QB Russell Wilson and QB Justin Fields. Wilson had just 40 receptions for 648 yards and 11 TDs in 2023 at Michigan, but he was in a very run-heavy offense that didn't need to pass the ball much en route to winning the national championship. Wilson is a very polished, versatile receiver with the potential to make waves as a rookie as long as the Steelers don't revert to a slow pace of play on offense under OC Arthur Smith.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson (ankle) is no longer in a walking boot after being carted off the field nearly a week ago. Even better, he isn't favoring his ankle while walking. The rookie was taken in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft after finishing his final collegiate season by amassing 789 yards and 12 touchdowns off 48 receptions. Hopefully, he'll be back on the field soon. While the injury could delay Wilson's progression, he has a chance to eventually overtake others on the depth chart and emerge as one of the team's top wideouts, giving him long-term appeal for dynasty participants.

Dynasty | Steelers rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson was carted off the field with an ankle injury. Dynasty Analysis: Any time you see "carted off," it merits quick attention. However, it seems Wilson has avoided a major injury and is considered week-to-week. One would imagine he has a high ankle sprain, which could be tricky to navigate. His absence will likely allow Calvin Austin to further the gap in between the two. Wilson remains a solid mid-round rookie pick and Austin should be rostered as well.

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson was carted off from practice on Tuesday with an ankle injury. Wilson, Pittsburgh's third-round pick, left practice after having his ankle rolled up on while running a jet-sweep during drills. Jeremy Fowler did report that Wilson would be "Ok", but could "miss some time" and labeled the injury week-to-week. In a wide-open Steelers passing game where the opportunity for targets after George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth is up for grabs, Wilson missing any time is detrimental to him getting reps within the offense. This setback puts Wilson behind fellow wide receivers Calvin Austin III and Van Jefferson in the pecking order for work in camp.

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson (ankle) has an ankle injury at training camp, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. Wilson is being evaluated to determine the severity and length of the time he'll need to miss. The 23-year-old third-rounder injured himself in practice on Tuesday, a day after a report surfaced that he was impressing early in training camp. Depending on how long Wilson will be out, it could be a setback that puts him behind the eight ball heading into his first NFL season as he attempts to stand out in a receiving corps with not many established options behind WR1 George Pickens. Wilson's injury will allow fellow wideouts Calvin Austin III, Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins more of an opportunity to impress the coaching staff as Pittsburgh's receiver depth chart sorts itself out.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson, who struggled during OTAs and minicamp, is now beginning to showcase the skills that led to his third-round draft selection. The rookie from Michigan received his opportunity on Saturday when the Steelers' first-team offense took the field, with Wilson stepping into the slot receiver role. He had a standout day, making several impressive catches from quarterbacks Justin Fields and Kyle Allen. Wilson is now firmly in the mix for the second wide receiver spot behind George Pickens, competing against Calvin Austin III and Van Jefferson. If he can secure the No. 2 role, Wilson could emerge as a sleeper with significant upside, given the Steelers' track record of drafting and developing wide receivers.

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan answered questions from the media at training camp on Thursday and said, "There's nothing going on right now," in terms of a trade for a wide receiver. Outside of George Pickens and Calvin Austin III, the rest of the receiving corps is new to the team. Roman Wilson, the rookie from Michigan, seems to be battling for the third spot, while Van Jefferson appears to be the front-runner for the second receiver. There's still plenty of time between now and the start of the season, but the Steelers appear to be comfortable with the state of their receivers right now.

The Athletic's Mark Kaboly writes that the biggest surprise of the Pittsburgh Steelers' offseason is that they seem perfectly satisfied watching how the WR2 position plays out in training camp among middle-of-the-road receivers Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, Marquez Callaway and Dez Fitzpatrick behind George Pickens. Whether they address the position before the season could hinge on the play of rookie Roman Wilson, but the entire group has been underwhelming enough that a big swing seems imminent. Receiver depth is severely lacking in Pittsburgh after they traded away Diontae Johnson this offseason. Austin, a fourth-rounder in 2022, could be the most intriguing option for an increased role in deeper fantasy leagues if the Steelers don't make a splash addition at the position. Training camp will give us a better idea of how the receiver depth chart will shake out.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected University of Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson with the No. 84 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The 22-year-old was one of J.J. McCarthy's favorite targets on the national champion Wolverines. He caught 49 passes for 789 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2023, showcasing his speed, hands, and route running skills on a national stage. The Steelers have been looking for wide receiver help ever since trading Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers. Wilson could immediately slot into the Steelers' No. 2 wide receiver role alongside George Pickens, giving him appeal in both redraft and dynasty leagues.

Apr 27 12:13am ET

Dynasty | The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson in round three of the NFL Draft. Dynasty Analysis: Now this is interesting. Somehow the 14th wide receiver taken overall, Wilson still has some tantalizing upside. Pittsburgh has historically done very well with receivers taken in the middle rounds and he fits the mold of a player with upside who could blossom in the right environment. With George Pickens the only real certainty on the depth chart, Wilson makes for a solid "high ceiling and low floor" type of rookie pick in the middle rounds of a rookie draft.
