2024 RTSports Outlook

Smith didn't follow his breakout season as he hoped, finishing just 17th overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. He was a little more erratic, having just five games with 20-plus fantasy points. He had three games with fewer than 11 fantasy points, showing his up-and-down play. Smith had 21 total touchdowns to nine interceptions for the season and threw for just over 3,600 yards. He also completed a solid 64.7 percent of his passes. Smith should continue to start for the Seahawks but might be on a shorter leash going forward, especially with a new coaching staff in place. Nothing is a complete given for Smith this year. But as long as he is starting, Smith has some of the best weapons in all of football to throw the ball. Smith has really improved his decision-making in the past few seasons and has shown great accuracy when throwing the ball. He also can make plays with his legs and does well in extending the play to make plays down the field.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Smith is more spot start material. He is not a surefire No. 1, but can post some big games in this offense. Look for him to post similar numbers to last year. He can throw for around 3,700 yards, score 25 total touchdowns and rush for around 200 yards.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith took a significant step back in 2023, throwing for just 3,624 yards and 20 touchdowns in 15 games. While racking up 658 fewer yards in two fewer games compared to his 2022 campaign, is reasonable, the drop in touchdowns from 30 to 20 really hurt fantasy managers. The former Comeback-Player-of-the-Year also regressed in his completion percentage (69.8% to 64.7%) and touchdown rate (5.2% to 4.0%). Despite the dip in production, there is reason for optimism in 2024. Two areas that show confidence in the signal caller are the team's pass rate over expectation in 2023 of 1.2%, which ranked sixth in the NFL, and their passing play percentage of 63%, which was the fifth highest, indicating they trust him to air it out. Additionally, the pro bowler will receive a new offensive mind calling plays in Ryan Grubb along with a bolstered O-line. He'll also have his two young tackles, Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas, back healthy. Smith won't slot in among the elite names at the position, but he's a solid second option in two-quarterback or superflex leagues with weekly streaming potential.

Aug 8 8:10pm ET

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith is not expected to play in Saturday's preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, according to head coach Mike Macdonald. Along with Smith, some other offensive starters won't play, either. Smith certainly won't be the only starting signal-caller around the league to sit out of the first preseason games this week. The 33-year-old also missed some practice time early in training camp due to hip and knee injuries, so the Seahawks aren't going to take any chances with the veteran early in the preseason. In new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb's system, Smith could look more like he did in his career-best season in 2022 than he did in 2023, especially with one of the best receiver trios in the game in DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Smith is a high-end QB2 with QB1 upside in favorable matchups.

From RotoBaller

Aug 7 8:00pm ET

The new Seattle Seahawks coaching staff really likes quarterback Geno Smith, and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has tailored his offense around Smith's strengths. "For people that haven't seen Geno throw in person, I think he's special," Grubb said. "He's an elite quarterback." Grubb's belief that Smith can make every throw is why the offense is shaped around his skill set. Smith has justified the coaches' faith in him with a strong training camp, and Seattle will likely view Smith and the passing game as diverse enough to have counterpunches for everything. The 33-year-old took a step back in 2023 after a career year in 2022, but he could be due for a step forward again under Grubb, whose offense at Washington was among the best in college football over the last two years. Nobody is saying fantasy managers should feel comfortable with Smith as their QB1, but he makes for a very strong QB2.

Aug 6 9:50pm ET

The Seattle Seahawks have signed center Connor Williams (knee) to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million on Tuesday. Williams' 2023 was spent with the Miami Dolphins, where an ACL injury ended his season in Week 14. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said that Williams made a "miraculous" recovery following surgery on his torn ACL, and would be ready in time for the beginning of training camps. As one of the top interior offensive linemen in his time with the Dolphins and before that, the Cowboys, the addition of Williams certainly will fortify the offensive interior for Geno Smith and the skill-position players this season. A healthy Williams should be in the conversation for Seattle's starting center job.

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith (hip/knee) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 5.

Fantasy Spin: As long as Smith is healthy, he's a viable QB2 option for fantasy managers.

From TheHuddle

Aug 5 1:40pm ET

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith (hip, knee) has returned to training camp practice on Monday and is doing some throwing in full pads. Smith injured both his hip and knee during practice last week but is back on the field and should be just fine in time for the start of the 2024 regular season this fall. The 33-year-old probably won't play in the team's preseason opener this Saturday against the Los Angeles Chargers, though. Smith had by the far the best season of his career in 2022, throwing for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 17 starts, but he predictably came back down to Earth last year and finished with 3,624 passing yards, 20 TDs and nine picks in 15 games. He still has one of the best receiving duos in the league in DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, so a bounce-back year is possible, just don't expect Smith to be a top-12 fantasy QB when all is said and done.

From RotoBaller

Aug 3 10:20pm ET

After missing several practices, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith (knee, hip) is expected to return to practice early next week. His testing came back clean, not revealing "anything significant," and the Seahawks can breathe a collective sigh of relief. The 33-year-old gives Seattle's offense its best chance of success, which accounts for his loaded wide receiver corps. This is still a situation to monitor, as we've yet to see him return to practice in full, but if Smith is healthy, there is a lot to be excited about with Ryan Grubb's new offensive scheme in Seattle. The 11-year veteran is RotoBaller's QB22 in superflex rankings and is an attractive sleeper target at his ADP (No. 101 on Sleeper). Geno is just two years removed from a 30-touchdown, 4,282-yard season while completing nearly 70% (69.8) of his passes.

Aug 3 6:23pm ET

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith (hip, knee) did not participate in practice Saturday, Aug. 3, but is expected to return to practice next week, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Fantasy Spin: It seems like Smith is dealing with some minor issues, but fantasy players can keep an eye on the situation. He has one of the better receiver corps to work with but probably should still be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback.

From TheHuddle

Aug 2 1:20pm ET

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith (knee/hip) had testing done on his injured knee and hip, and tests did not reveal anything significant. According to one of Adam Schefter's sources, Smith "shouldn't miss any time." This is great news for the longtime journeyman turned solid starter heading into 2024. Smith has thrown for nearly 8,000 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions in his last 32 starts after taking over for longtime franchise quarterback Russell Wilson in Seattle. With D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Noah Fant, and Kenneth Walker III still on the roster, the 33-year-old has enough upside to be a solid QB2 in Superflex formats. However, fantasy managers should not count on him as a starter in single-QB setups given his lack of high-end rushing upside.

From RotoBaller

Aug 2 10:33am ET

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith (knee, hip) had imaging done that didn't reveal anything major, and he's not expected to miss time.

Fantasy Spin: Smith is a so-so QB2 and is best served in two-QB leagues.

From TheHuddle

Aug 1 10:20pm ET

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith (knee, hip) missed his second straight practice Thursday after getting "banged up a little bit" at practice this past Tuesday. He came up favoring his leg after having a defensive teammate collide with him during non-contact drills. Smith is set for imaging on Thursday evening to assess the severity of the injury. For now, the news around the injury remains murky. Sam Howell will step into the QB1 role for the time being, with P.J. Walker backing him up. Any time away from the field right now is negative with the installation of Ryan Grubbs' new offense, and this offense gets a clear downgrade with one of the other current quarterbacks on the roster manning the helm. Smith is the NFFC QB23 and could be seen as a solid QB2 target in best-ball and superflex drafts before the injury. However, it might behoove fantasy managers to steer clear of this situation for now while we wait for news on his injury.

From RotoBaller

Aug 1 7:23pm ET

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith (hip, knee) has been dealing with some injuries and is scheduled to undergo some imaging on the injuries, according to head coach Mike Macdonald.

Fantasy Spin: Fantasy players can monitor the situation to see how long Smith may be sidelined. He will be the Seahawks starter as long as he is healthy but probably is only a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Aug 1 1:53am ET

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith (hip, knee) did not practice Wednesday, July 31, to rest some soreness in his hip and knee.

From TheHuddle

Jul 18 1:03am ET

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith is entering a 'make-or-break' season, in the opinion of The Athletic's Michael-Shawn Dugar, who notes Smith has a cap hit of $38.5 million in 2025 and will need to prove to the new coaching staff that he's worth having his contract reworked.

Fantasy Spin: Smith wasn't nearly as productive last year as he was in 2022, and he enters 2024 on the low end of QB2 territory despite a talented top-three receivers. Given that the Seahawks traded for QB Sam Howell, who started for the Washington Commanders last season, you can imagine Smith could be on a relatively short leash.

From TheHuddle

Jun 21 2:40pm ET

Seattle Seahawks new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said the offense won't be as pass-happy as his offense was with the University of Washington, and he also plans to use fewer pre-snap motions and shifts, but Grubb wants to put a lot of responsibility on quarterback Geno Smith. The 33-year-old veteran signal-caller has welcomed more responsibility, but the results have so far been mixed in offseason workouts. Head coach Mike Macdonald has been impressed with Smith's plan, and the offense will have an extra opportunity to test itself during the preseason in joint practices with the Tennessee Titans. Smith had a career year in 2022 and was the QB5 in fantasy, but he predictably fell to QB15 in 2023. Nobody is saying Smith is a QB1 in fantasy, but a bounce-back is entirely plausible in what could be a more dynamic offense. Target him as a low-end QB2 in superflex formats.

From RotoBaller

May 24 2:43pm ET

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith said he likes the scheme that offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb is bringing to the team because it matches his drop-back passing style of play.

Fantasy Spin: Smith saw a drop in his stats this last season but still has one of the better receiving corps to work with in the NFL. He should be able to improve on his stats in 2024 but probably will be a No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

May 22 9:30pm ET

The Seattle Seahawks are in the early stages of installing new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb's offense during organized team activities this spring. However, quarterback Geno Smith feels that he has "a really good grasp" of the offense so far and that it fits his skillset in a few ways. "I feel like I'm a dropback passer and I feel like this is a dropback offense," Smith said. The signal-caller went on to describe it as "an offense that's going to spread the ball around and trust the quarterbacks to make the right decisions... pre-and-post snap. I feel like that's something I'm really good at." A spread offense would be good for Smith and his receivers. The 33-year-old was a Pro Bowler in each of the last two years, but he was definitely not as productive in 2023 and missed two games with injuries. Smith probably won't ever be as good as his 2022 campaign again, but he can be a serviceable No. 2 in superflex fantasy formats.

From RotoBaller

Mar 27 8:10pm ET

The Seattle Seahawks are looking to make some additions to their offensive line this offseason. Recently, Seahawks general manager John Schneider said the team has a lot to figure out on the o-line. This team is without left guard Damien Lewis and right guard Phil Haynes who both left for free agency. Possibly, the Seahawks use the 16th overall pick in the draft to add some offensive line. It appears Seattle is still looking to compete next season with Geno Smith slated to be under center. Most of the Seahawks offensive weapons are back, but this team could be in serious trouble if they don't patch up their o-line soon.

From RotoBaller

Mar 23 9:40pm ET

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith will enter the 2024-25 campaign as the team's starter. New head coach Mike Macdonald has avoided the topic since taking over. However, he finally addressed the situation with NFL Media's Tom Pelissero. "Very confident in Geno," said MacDonald. "Geno's going to be our starter." The signal-caller had a down season in 2023-24, throwing for 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also completed just 64.7% of his throws, a significant reduction from the previous year. But Smith was the 2022 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, so if anyone can turn things around, it's him. Yet, if he struggles during the season, he could find himself sitting behind Sam Howell, who was acquired by the Commanders just over a week ago. For now, fantasy managers shouldn't reach for Smith in drafts. With that in mind, while the 33-year-old might struggle at times, especially under a new head coach, he'll likely have more than a few productive fantasy showings.

From RotoBaller

Mar 23 5:33pm ET

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith will not have any competition for the starting job next season, and QB Sam Howell knows he will be the backup, according to head coach Mike Macdonald.

Fantasy Spin: Smith will have to learn a new offense this offseason but still has one of the better receiver groups in the NFL. He probably should be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback in most fantasy leagues and will not be in the starting lineup often.

From TheHuddle

Mar 10 7:43pm ET

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith is not a lock to start in 2024 based on recent comments by head coach Mike Macdonald during a radio interview on Friday, March 8.

Fantasy Spin: Smith came back down to earth in 2024 but his overall numbers weren't terrible, with the Seahawks signal-caller finishing as QB18 overall despite missing two games due to injury. Smith has a massive dead-cap number this year and cutting him wouldn't net any savings, so it looks like he'll be on the roster no matter what, barring a trade. As far as competition is concerned, the Seahawks don't have any on the roster and Smith's stiffest competition might come from a rookie if Seattle drafts a quarterback. The veteran would be considered the favorite to start in that situation and if he wins, Smith will enter 2024 as a QB2.
