Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt was inefficient during their loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday evening. Hunt ran the ball five times for a mere 16 yards, averaging a low 3.2 yards per carry. Through the air, Hunt was able to bring in two of his three targets for 10 yards. Despite his modest showing on the ground, Hunt saw the same amount of carries (five) as presumed starter Isiah Pacheco. However, given Hunt's underwhelming production, the Chiefs may look to decrease his workload later in the season as Pacheco averaged 5.0 YPC in this contest. In 2024, Hunt replaced the injured Pacheco and served as the lead option for most of the campaign, but carried a low ceiling as he posted a similar 3.2 YPC on 200 attempts. For now, managers in deeper formats should view Hunt as low-range, touchdown-dependent RB3 heading into their Week 2 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt rushed five times for 16 yards and caught two of his three targets for 10 yards in a 27-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1.

Fantasy Spin: Hunt and Isiah Pacheco both finished with five carries and seven total touches, and overall, the Chiefs made little effort to establish he running game. Even if Hunt continues to split touches evenly with Pacheco, he will be no more than a flex option if the Chiefs don't lean on the run more moving forward.

Aug 23 3:40am CT

Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt had three carries for 15 yards in the 27-29 loss to the Chicago Bears. Hunt tied with Isiah Pacheco for the most running back carries with the starting offense, but the latter finished with more yards and a touchdown. Hunt is in line to be the RB2 for Kansas City, but the extent of his role is still undetermined. Pacheco took the field with the starters first, but Hunt had a goal-line carry on the first drive. Hunt also received one target compared to none for Pacheco. If Hunt is the passing downs back with goal line opportunities, he could end up being the best fantasy option out of the backfield. This is all just speculation based on preseason usage, but it is an important situation to track once the regular season begins.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt (quadriceps) may not be available to play in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 15, because of his quadriceps contusion, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt (quad) has a quad contusion and could miss Friday's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, according to head coach Andy Reid. The 30-year-old appeared in last week's game against the Arizona Cardinals, logging three total touches for 17 yards. While any preseason injury is not ideal, the team is likely to be extra cautious with its veterans ahead of Week 1 of the regular season. The Chiefs' backfield is one of the most difficult to navigate for fantasy football, as Isiah Pacheco, Elijah Mitchell, Hunt, and seventh-round rookie Brashard Smith could all factor into a committee. However, Pacheco should be viewed as the starter for now.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt (quadriceps) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Aug. 13, because of a quadriceps contusion.

Aug 10 3:30am CT

Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt totaled 17 yards on three touches, with 12 yards on the ground and five through the air. Hunt to a backseat to starting running back Isiah Pacheco, which will likely remain the case during the regular season. Pacheco was lighting the world on fire before his injury last season, and Hunt took his place. Hunt was a serviceable fantasy asset, mostly due to his goal-line role, but it remains to be seen if he will be viable this season. Hunt should be viewed as a valuable handcuff this draft season.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt was a player of some interest to the Chicago Bears before he re-signed with the Chiefs last week.

Fantasy Spin: The most likely reason Hunt was of interest was the presence of the running backs coach Eric Bieniemy, who spent two seasons with Hunt earlier in his career. Another major reason for the interest in Hunt is that he would have brought a physical between-the-tackles complement to a backfield that D'Andre Swift and little else. Expect Chicago to invest in a physical running back in next month's draft, with North Carolina's Omarion Hampton and Iowa's Kaleb Johnson likely to be of the most interest to new head coach Ben Johnson.

Dynasty | The Chiefs have re-signed running back Kareem Hunt. Dynasty Analysis: Hunt had a good run with the Chiefs last season, posting 728 rushing yards and seven touchdowns after taking over for the injured Isiah Pacheco. He was only able to post 23 catches in 13 games and hardly looked like the explosive player we once saw. Still, he proved to be capable and that's all the Chiefs needed. With Pacheco back and Elijah Mitchell in the fold, this entire backfield looks like one to avoid in dynasty leagues. Hunt still has value, but this really does look like a two or three-headed mess next season.

Free-agent RB Kareem Hunt (Chiefs) reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth $1.5 million - and as much as $2.5 million - to return to the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, March 14.

Fantasy Spin: Hunt was a serviceable fill-in for Isiah Pacheco for most of the time the latter was out with a leg injury in 2024, but the former was one of the more inefficient backs in the league. The contract length and value suggest Hunt will have to fight for a roster spot this summer, especially after the team added Elijah Mitchell in free agency. Hunt may hold some fantasy value at some point in 2025, but it would likely result from Pacheco and/or Mitchell missing significant time due to injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs are re-signing veteran running back Kareem Hunt to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with incentives on Friday, a source tells NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Hunt began last year on the street before he reunited with the Chiefs when starting RB Isaiah Pacheco went down with an early-season injury. The 29-year-old ended up being a big waiver-wire pickup for fantasy managers, as he went on to rush for 728 yards -- his most since 2020 with the Cleveland Browns -- and seven touchdowns on 200 rushing attempts in 13 regular-season games (eight starts). Hunt also added 23 catches for 176 yards through the air. It was a nice career resurgence for Hunt, who started his career with two seasons in KC back in 2017-18. However, with Pacheco healthy and the team bringing in Elijah Mitchell in free agency, Hunt could be the No. 3 back to open the 2025 season.
