Double Sluggo

2024 RTSports Outlook

Godwin had a down season for his standards. He did top 1,000 yards but score just twice and was 28th overall in fantasy receiver scoring. Godwin did have 80-plus receptions for the third straight season and dropped just five passes all year. He had 11 of 17 games with double-digit fantasy points, including a 20-plus point showing in Week 15. He just didn't have as many of the big games as he did in past seasons. Godwin remains an elite target in the prime of his career, though. Godwin is a big-play threat at receiver but has turned into a top-notch possession receiver in recent seasons. He has top speed and a knack for running by defenders. His route running and hands are much improved since earlier in his career, moving into the elite category of NFL receivers. He can be slowed by injury at times, missing games four of the last five seasons.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Godwin can improve on last year. His touchdown totals really hurt his fantasy value. If he can just get a few more scores, Godwin should be a solid No. 2 fantasy receiver once again. Look for around 90 receptions for 1,100 yards and seven touchdowns.

Player Notes

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin already appears to be in midseason form, according to his teammate Mike Evans. "He's going to have a great year," said Evans. "He looks like he's in midseason form. He's making plays, going deep, looks like the 2019 Chris Godwin. He's always been an unbelievable player and leader for us, and I expect no different this year." The 2017 No. 84 overall pick had the best year of his career in 2019, amassing 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns off 86 catches. However, his trips to the end zone have declined since then despite getting more targets than ever. With that said, there are plans to use Godwin more in the slot, and his rapport with Baker Mayfield continues to improve. As a result, a comeback year for Godwin could easily be on the horizon, assuming he remains healthy.

The Bucs plan to use wide receiver Chris Godwin more in the slot in 2024 after shifting him outside last year with an eye on avoiding injuries. It's the same role Cooper Kupp had with the Rams when Liam Coen was running the offense in LA. Godwin did manage to stay healthy last year, and in so doing he posted his third straight 1,000-yard season with 83 receptions on 130 targets, although he disappointed by scoring just two touchdowns in 17 starts.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have said they plan to use wide receiver Chris Godwin more in the slot in 2024 after shifting him outside last year with an eye on avoiding injuries. It's the same role Cooper Kupp had with the Los Angeles Rams when Liam Coen was running the offense in LA. Godwin did manage to stay healthy last year, and in so doing he posted his third straight 1,000-yard season with 83 receptions on 130 targets, although he disappointed by scoring just two touchdowns in 17 starts. The 28-year-old has been more effective in his career while operating out of the slot and he'll have continuity at quarterback with Baker Mayfield re-signing this offseason. Injuries are always a concern when it comes to Godwin, but with a move back to the slot in 2024, he'll certainly be an attractive fantasy selection as a low-end WR3/high-end WR4/flex this fall.

May 7 7:43pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin will be used primarily as a slot receiver in offensive coordinator Liam Coen's scheme, according to wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon.

Fantasy Spin: Godwin was used as an outside receiver last season but will return to the slot where he has had success in the pass. He will continue to be a big part of the passing game for the Bucs and can be a No. 3 receiver in fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

May 6 4:20pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin is moving back into the slot receiver role in 2024, according to his position coach, Bryan McClendon. Godwin, who has posted at least 1,000 receiving yards in four of his last five seasons, played just 32.1% of his snaps in the slot last year. In 2022, he lined up in the slot 57.6% of the time. The 28-year-old's 7.6 targets per game was his lowest clip since 2020, so perhaps a move back to his more natural position will see that figure come back toward the 9.0 per game range. Mike Evans remains in the X-role, while Trey Palmer and third-round rookie Jalen McMillan will compete to start in three-wide sets.
