New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye will open his second pro season against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Maye showed several flashes of potential last year, and there's optimism that his accurate passing skills and mobility could make him a fringe top-12 quarterback this year. He definitely has top-12 upside in Week 1 against the Raiders, who allowed the eighth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks last year. It also helps that Maye is playing with the best receiver group of his career, headlined by veteran Stefon Diggs. Maye should be started in all two-quarterback formats, and he's even a strong option in deeper single-quarterback leagues.

The New England Patriots have a "strong internal belief" that quarterback Drake Maye will take a step forward in the second season of his career, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic. Maye, the third overall pick in the 2024 draft, took over the starting job in Week 6 as a rookie and went on to flash his sky-high potential over 13 games. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound dual threat completed 66.6% of passes for 2,276 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He added another 421 yards and two scores on the ground, averaging a gaudy 7.8 yards per attempt on 54 rushes. While the 22-year-old will likely experience some growing pains, especially as he gets acclimated to a new system under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, he should benefit from a better supporting cast than he had in 2024. Maye is going into the season as RotoBaller's 14th-ranked QB, but his upside is significant.
From RotoBaller
According to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye had "a relatively positive training camp" this summer, "but maybe he didn't take that huge leap that a lot of people expected him to -- or that I expected him to." Kyed also mentioned that there were "growing pains." Maye did a good job limiting turnovers in practice settings, but then he would turn the ball over in scrimmages or the preseason. A lot is expected of the 22-year-old after he was taken third overall in the 2024 draft out of North Carolina, but fantasy managers must remember that this will be his first full year as the starter under center, and Kyed even says that he could still be acclimating to offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' system early on. More growing pains in 2025 should be expected, but Maye is still an midrange QB2 target with upside in fantasy.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye completed four of his seven pass attempts for 46 yards during Saturday's preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings. His first drive led to a punt, while the second resulted in a TreVeyon Henderson rushing touchdown. Maye's performance was nothing special; some of his passes either sailed over his receivers or required them to change direction to catch the pass so they were unable to turn upfield for extra yardage. He also took an inexcusable delay of game penalty. The preseason is the perfect time for players to learn from their mistakes, so perhaps Maye will come out even stronger during next week's contest in preparation for his second NFL season. Nevertheless, his accuracy and ability to lead the offense will be worth monitoring as Maye looks to avoid the notorious sophomore slump.
