Texans seek improvement from C.J. Stroud vs. scuffling Cowboys

Fri Nov 15 2:25am ET
Field Level Media

C.J. Stroud appeared ahead of his years when he put together a strong rookie campaign last season and guided the Houston Texans to a playoff victory.

However, things haven't come easy for Stroud of late and the Texans are looking for the star quarterback to begin a turnaround when they visit the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.

As Houston (6-4) has dropped three of its past four games, Stroud has completed just 53.7 percent of his passes. He has been sacked 18 times during that span.

Stroud also threw two interceptions last week in a 26-23 home loss to the Detroit Lions. The Texans blew a 16-point halftime lead in that contest.

"I try to not only make plays but take care of the football and do the right things that win the game," Stroud said Thursday. "Sometimes it goes our way, and sometimes it (doesn't)."

Despite their slump, the Texans still lead the AFC South by two games over the Indianapolis Colts.

Still, getting Stroud back in form is a huge priority. During the tough times, Stroud passed for a career-worst 86 yards in a setback against the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 20, was sacked eight times and completed just 36.7 percent of his passes (11 of 30) during a loss to the New York Jets on Oct. 31.

Stroud's six interceptions are more than he tossed (five) in 15 starts as a rookie.

However, Houston coach DeMeco Ryans emphasized that the issues aren't limited to his quarterback.

"Nobody can shoulder all of the responsibility," Ryans said. "For C.J., yeah, it's 10 other guys around him. But just like those 10 other guys and C.J., all the defensive players, special teams, everybody has a job to do and everybody is expected to do that job to the best of their ability. And if everybody executes and everyone plays the proper way and does their job the right way, then we'll be fine."

Dallas (3-6) has dropped four consecutive games and has bigger problems at quarterback with Dak Prescott (hamstring) done for the season.

Cooper Rush started last weekend in a 34-6 home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and the results were ugly.

Rush completed 13 of 23 passes for just 45 yards with a long gain of 10 yards. Trey Lance finished up and was 4 of 6 for 21 yards and one interception.

Big-play receiver CeeDee Lamb had just 21 yards on six receptions.

"The work is going to get done," Lamb said. "And, with me, I take full responsibility in getting in sync with (Rush).

"We're going to ride this thing out through the rest of the season, so I have the most confidence in him. I don't care what happened last week, and last week is last week."

Dallas coach Mike McCarthy made it clear that the team's 3.9-yard average per reception was unacceptable.

"How can you manufacture the ball getting down the field or getting it into green grass, we had a number of crossing routes that we felt good about and it just didn't happen," McCarthy said. "And that's the way the game goes. ... Ball didn't go down the field enough, that's for sure."

Rush is dealing with a neck injury but was a full practice participant on Thursday.

Cowboys star guard Zack Martin (shoulder) sat out practice, though he continues to play through the ailment. Cornerbacks DaRon Bland (foot), Caelen Carson (shoulder/illness) and Jourdan Lewis (neck) missed the Thursday session, as did tight end Jake Ferguson (illness), fullback Hunter Luepke (calf) and linebacker Nick Vigil (foot).

Texans receiver Nico Collins (hamstring) is set to return from a five-game absence. He said after Friday's practice that he will play.

Houston star defensive end Will Anderson Jr. (ankle) sat out practice Thursday. He missed the loss to the Lions.

Also sitting out for the Texans with injuries were cornerbacks Kamari Lassiter (concussion) and Derek Stingley Jr. (hip) and defensive tackle Foley Fatukasi (foot).

The Cowboys have won four of their six meetings with the Texans, including a 27-23 home win in the most recent matchup on Dec. 11, 2022.

Hot Plays, Fades and Sleepers: Week 11

Player Notes
Elijah Moore Nov 15 9:10pm ET
Elijah Moore

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Elijah Moore comes out of his bye to take on the New Orleans Saints on the road in Week 11. Moore has been heavily targeted over his past two games, drawing 21 targets over that span. The Saints represent a decent matchup for Moore as they are allowing the 11th-most fantasy points per game to opposing wideouts. Moore has gone over 44 receiving yards just once all season and has yet to cross the goal line but his recent target volume makes him worth a look as a flex option in PPR leagues this weekend.

David Njoku Nov 15 9:10pm ET
David Njoku

Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku will come out of his bye to face off against the New Orleans Saints on the road in Week 11. Njoku has been on a hot streak of late, catching 20 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns over his past three contests. The Saints have been a middle-of-the-road matchup for tight ends this season as they are allowing the 18th-most fantasy points per game to the position thus far. Njoku has emerged as one of Jameis Winston's favorite targets since he took over as quarterback for the Browns and should be treated as a top-five fantasy tight end this weekend.

From RotoBaller

Dustin Hopkins Nov 15 9:10pm ET
Dustin Hopkins

Cleveland Browns kicker Dustin Hopkins comes out of his bye week to take on the New Orleans Saints on the road in Week 11. Hopkins has made 14 of his 18 field-goal attempts and all but two of his 12 extra points through nine games. The Saints have been a plus matchup for kickers in fantasy this season, allowing the fourth-most fantasy points per game to the position. Hopkins is worth considering as a top-15 fantasy kicker heading into Week 11.

From RotoBaller

Cedric Tillman Nov 15 9:00pm ET
Cedric Tillman

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Cedric Tillman comes out of his bye to take on the New Orleans Saints on the road in Week 11. Tillman was in the midst of a mini breakout before his bye, posting 21 catches for 255 yards and three touchdowns over his past three games. The second-year wideout will look to keep it going against a Saints defense that is allowing the 11th-most fantasy points per game to the position this season. Tillman and Jameis Winston have shown nice chemistry together thus far, making him trustworthy as a WR2 in fantasy in Week 11.

From RotoBaller

Mack Hollins Nov 15 9:00pm ET
Mack Hollins

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Mack Hollins (shoulder) is in line for another start in Week 11 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Keon Coleman (wrist) will be inactive. Amari Cooper (wrist) is a question mark. Hollins is also on the injury report but did not miss practice this week and will be active on Sunday. With both Coleman and Cooper out of the lineup in Week 10, Hollins led the Bills with 86 receiving yards. Most of his production came on a 44-yard completion. Against a great Kansas City defense, Hollins can't be trusted to pace the Bills again nor should he be in fantasy football lineups. Buffalo's coaching staff likes him on the field for his intangibles more than his receiving skills.

From RotoBaller

Jerry Jeudy Nov 15 9:00pm ET
Jerry Jeudy

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy (knee) comes out of his bye to take on the New Orleans Saints on the road in Week 11. Jeudy continues to be listed on the Browns' injury report with a knee issue but he practiced fully all week and is listed without an injury designation heading into the weekend. The Saints represent a plus matchup for Jeudy as they are allowing the 11th-most fantasy points per game to the receiver position this season. Jeudy has reached at least 73 receiving yards in each of his two starts with Jameis Winston under center and should continue to see plenty of opportunities with Winston attempting at least 41 passes in each of his past two contests. Jeudy is worth a look as a flex option in fantasy this weekend.

From RotoBaller

Anthony Richardson Nov 15 9:00pm ET
Anthony Richardson

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson will be back under center for the first time since Week 8 after Joe Flacco led the team over the last two weeks. According to head coach Shane Steichen, Richardson will be the QB for the remainder of the season, but hopefully it will yield better results this time around. The 23-year-old produced an unsightly 44.4% completion rate in the six games he's played in this season and a subpar 4:7 TD:INT. His saving grace for fantasy was the fact that he gained at least 24 rush yards in each of those contests, but the only time he managed to punch one in for a score was way back in Week 1. With a poor matchup against the Jets on the road on tap in Week 11, it will be a challenge to put up useful fantasy output against a defense allowing the eighth-fewest points to opposing signal-callers and versus an opponent that is playing at home in desperate need of a win. The former first-round pick is a low-end QB2 for Sunday with a tiny bit of upside because of his legs.

From RotoBaller

Tyler Bass Nov 15 9:00pm ET
Tyler Bass

Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass is 9-for-9 on field goals and 12-for-13 on extra points since Week 6. His resurgence came at a time when his job appeared to be in jeopardy. For fantasy football, he's scored the second-most points at the position in that timeframe. Overall, he's 30-for-33 on extra points and 18-for-21 on field goals. With his confidence back, Bass ranks as a top-12 kicker against the Chiefs. The Bills offense is missing key pieces in Keon Coleman (wrist) and Dalton Kincaid (knee) which could lead to more field goal opportunities.

From RotoBaller

James Cook Nov 15 8:50pm ET
James Cook

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is a fantasy football RB1 this season but will have an uphill battle to land in the top 12 in Week 11. The Kansas City Chiefs allow the fewest fantasy points per game to running backs and surrender 3.17 yards per carry. Cook can make up for a lack of rushing efficiency with work in the passing game. However, he only caught one pass against the Colts last week. That was without Amari Cooper (wrist) and Keon Coleman (wrist) in the lineup. Coleman will be out again. So will tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee). Cooper is questionable. The Chiefs may focus more on containing Cook on backfield routes. Regardless, the 25-year-old will see plenty of usage and ranks as an RB2 this week.

From RotoBaller

Khalil Shakir Nov 15 8:50pm ET
Khalil Shakir

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir has four straight games with at least six receptions and enters Week 11 leading the team in catches (48) and receiving yards (529). He's providing a safe PPR floor and should get plenty of looks on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. Wide receiver Keon Coleman (wrist) and tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee) will not play. Amari Cooper (wrist) is questionable and sporting a cast. The Chiefs are most susceptible to receiver production from the slot. That's Shakir's role and the health of other receivers does not impact that. The 24-year-old ranks as a high-end WR3 in PPR formats this week.

From RotoBaller

Nick Chubb Nov 15 8:50pm ET
Nick Chubb

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb comes out of his bye to face off against the New Orleans Saints on the road in Week 11. Chubb has struggled in his three games played this season, averaging just 2.7 yards per carry on 42 attempts. The Saints have been one of the best matchups for running backs in the league this season as they are allowing the third-most fantasy points per game to the position. Chubb can be trusted as a low-end RB2 heading into Week 11 thanks to the friendly matchup.

From RotoBaller

Dawson Knox Nov 15 8:50pm ET
Dawson Knox

Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox will be the team's go-to tight end this week against the Kansas City Chiefs. Dalton Kincaid (knee) will be inactive. Despite logging just 10 receptions this season, the 28-year-old is in the streaming conversation. He's had explosive weeks in the past and the matchup is fantastic. Defending the tight end position is the weakness of the Kansas City defense. The unit allows the second-most fantasy points and most yards to the position. Fantasy managers needing help at tight end should be able to find Knox on the waiver wire and plug him into lineups.

From RotoBaller

Jameis Winston Nov 15 8:40pm ET
Jameis Winston

Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston comes out of his bye with a road game against the New Orleans Saints. The Saints have been good against opposing quarterbacks this season as they are allowing just the 24th-most fantasy points per game to the position this season. Winston should see plenty of volume as he has made over 40 pass attempts in each of his two starts this year. The veteran is a viable fantasy option as a QB2 heading into Week 11 against New Orleans.

From RotoBaller

Josh Allen Nov 15 8:40pm ET
Josh Allen

Whether on the ground or through the air, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (left hand) delivers 20+ fantasy point performances. He hasn't had a disappointing result since Week 5. Fantasy managers hope that doesn't change in Week 11 against a stout Kansas City defense. The Chiefs are better against the run than the pass, but Allen will also be without two of his primary receivers. Tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee) and wide receiver Keon Coleman (wrist) will be inactive. Amari Cooper (wrist) is questionable. Allen appeared on the injury report again with a hand injury that hasn't hampered him at all. Despite all that, Allen ranks as a QB1 in what should be a highly competitive game that could determine home-field advantage in the postseason.

From RotoBaller

Chris Boswell Nov 15 8:30pm ET
Chris Boswell

Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell played a limited role in the team's victory last week and will look to make more of an impact against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11. While Baltimore has been middle-of-the-road against fantasy kickers this season, Sunday's divisional showdown is tied for the highest over/under of the week. The Steelers should be able to throw and score on the Ravens, but it's hard to imagine Boswell goes another week without a field goal attempt. Boswell has been automatic all season, so he can be expected to produce for fantasy purposes if his number is called. Fantasy managers can lock Boswell in as a top-five option in this potential shootout.

From RotoBaller

Kirk Cousins Nov 15 8:30pm ET
Kirk Cousins

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins (elbow, shoulder) was a full participant in Friday's practice after popping up on the injury report earlier in the week. Cousins is coming off of 300-yard passing game versus the Saints in Week 10, but the yardage total came without a single TD and he threw a pick. The only two games this season in which the veteran signal-caller was held without a TD pass both came against the Saints, but Week 11 brings a tough road matchup against the Broncos who have limited QBs to the 11th-fewest fantasy points this season. Denver has been more vulnerable in recent weeks, though, allowing three straight 220-plus yard passers and six touchdowns over the last three weeks, compared to just two 220-yard passers and six TDS over the first seven weeks. View the 36-year-old as a low-end QB2 this week as they could decide to ride Bijan Robinson and the run game instead in a contest that has the Falcons as two-point underdogs with just 44 expected total points.

From RotoBaller

Pat Freiermuth Nov 15 8:20pm ET
Pat Freiermuth

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth salvaged his Week 10 performance with a touchdown and will hope to earn more opportunities when facing the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. The Ravens, who have been extremely vulnerable to the pass all season, give up the eighth-most fantasy points per game to opposing tight ends. Although Freiermuth is averaging fewer than three targets per contest with Russell Wilson at quarterback, he should be on the fantasy radar this week given this enticing game environment with a 48.5-point over/under. It's difficult to trust Freiermuth as a fantasy TE1, but he can be considered a streaming option or high-end TE2 for Week 11.

From RotoBaller

Mike Williams Nov 15 8:10pm ET
Mike Williams

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Williams made the most of his limited snaps in Week 10 and will look to get more involved in a divisional showdown with the Baltimore Ravens. Williams, who caught his only target for a 32-yard touchdown in his Steelers debut, is likely to see more playing time now in his second week with the team and could get a few shots downfield from quarterback Russell Wilson. This is certainly a matchup that Williams and teammate George Pickens can exploit as the Ravens have surrendered the most fantasy points per game to wideouts this season. While fantasy managers shouldn't be starting Williams in most redraft formats on Sunday, he has some upside as a DFS play in what projects to be a high-scoring affair.

From RotoBaller

Jonathan Taylor Nov 15 7:50pm ET
Jonathan Taylor

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has been highly effective when healthy this season, playing in seven of the Colts' 10 games and averaging 88.0 YPG rushing while adding 12 catches for 108 yards receiving. Along with five TDs on the year, the 25-year-old has been one of the lone bright spots on offense in 2024. With Anthony Richardson back at QB in Week 11, the Colts will likely lean more heavily on the ground attack versus the Jets who have been weak against the run over their past four contests, allowing a pair of 100-yard rushers and five scores during that time. Even so, with the uncertainty at quarterback and the Colts as four-point underdogs in a game with a low expected total, Taylor figures to be more of a fringe RB1 in Week 11.

From RotoBaller

Jared Goff Nov 15 7:40pm ET
Jared Goff

Detroit Lions left tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder) practiced in full on Thursday and Friday and was removed from the final Week 11 injury report, so he will be active on Sunday to face the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars. Decker will return to action to protect quarterback Jared Goff's blind side after sitting out the Week 10 win over the Houston Texans last Sunday night. The 30-year-old former 16th overall pick in 2016 out of Ohio State has started in all 120 games he's appeared in over his nine-year NFL career. His return is great news for Goff and the rest of Detroit's offense this weekend in a game that the Lions are favored by two touchdowns.
