Brewers edge Cards in 10th on William Contreras' hit

William Contreras drove in both runs for the visiting Brewers on Friday night as Milwaukee edged the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 in 10 innings.

Brewers starting pitcher Freddy Peralta held the Cardinals to four hits and two walks in six scoreless innings. He struck out seven.

Reliever Joel Payamps (1-1) earned the victory and Hoby Milner earned his first career save.

Cardinals starting pitcher Kyle Gibson held the Brewers to one run on three hits and four walks while striking out three in six innings. Reliever Ryan Helsley (1-2) took the loss.


The Cardinals had a runner cut down at the plate in the second. Willson Contreras hit a single, took second on Masyn Winn's single and tried to score from second on a passed ball.

But William Contreras threw out his brother Willson.

Blake Perkins and William Contreras doubled in the third to put the Brewers up 1-0.

Gibson walked Rhys Hoskins and Brice Turang with one out in the fourth before Gary Sanchez grounded into a double play.

Willy Adames led off the sixth with a single and stole second base with one out. But Hoskins popped out and Turang grounded out to strand him.

Lars Nootbaar and Nolan Arenado hit two-out singles in the sixth and Willson Contreras walked to load the bases. Peralta struck out Nolan Gorman to end the threat.

The Cardinals tied the game 1-1 in the ninth.

Winn drew a two-out walk and raced to third to on Alec Burleson's single. Payamps relieved Trevor Megill and hit Ivan Herrera with a pitch to load the bases, then walked Brendan Donovan to force in the tying run.

Payamps got Goldschmidt to ground out to send the game to extra innings.

William Contreras hit a two-out RBI single in the 10th to put Milwaukee up 2-1, then Milner stranded runners on second and third by striking out Gorman.
