Adam Ottavino Sat Sep 30 10:00pm ET

New York Mets relief pitcher Adam Ottavino gave up two runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout but held on for his 12th save of the year in Game 1 of Saturday's twin bill with the Philadelphia Phillies. Ottavino, brought on to protect a three-run lead, nearly spoiled a great Tylor Megill start. Brandon Marsh split the left-center field gap for a ground rule RBI double across before Weston Wilson snuck an RBI single up the middle. Ottavino struck out Jake Cave looking before grooving a fastball for Cristian Pache to get under it for a relieving flyout. It always feels like an adventure when Ottavino takes the mound, but the 37-year-old helped fill in as closer after July's David Robertson trade. He totes a 3.21 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 62:29 K:BB with 12 saves in 61 2/3 frames. The right-hander has a 2024 player option.

Tylor Megill Sat Sep 30 9:50pm ET

New York Mets right-hander Tylor Megill fired 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts for his ninth win of the year in the matinee of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Philadelphia Phillies. Megill cruised through seven scoreless innings before permitting a few singles to the bottom of the order ahead of Philadelphia's lineup turning over in the eighth frame, causing his removal at 101 pitches. The 28-year-old was provided an early four-run lead, and it was just enough, as closer Adam Ottavino allowed things to get interesting in the ninth. Megill turned in a respectable final month of play with a 2.55 ERA in 35 1/3 innings (six starts). The right-hander has served as more of an innings eater for the Mets in recent years, but he could be part of a rebuilding 2024 rotation after they moved Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander at the trade deadline.

Daulton Varsho Sat Sep 30 9:30pm ET

Toronto Blue Jays catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. While it's damaging loss for Toronto's wild card hopes, Varsho did his part with the bat. He smacked a third-inning solo jack to get his club on the board before plating two more runs on a go-ahead single during the fourth frame. Varsho is carrying a hot stick lately, hitting .262 with four homers, two triples, and nine RBI in 42 at-bats since Sep. 15. The hybrid backstop's first year with the Jays following an offseason trade was fairly ordinary, slashing .220/.286/.391 with 20 big flies, 68 RBI, and 16 stolen bases over 522 at-bats ahead of free agency. Varsho ranks outside the top 10 catchers in 2023, but he'll remain fantasy relevant if he retains that eligibility next year.

Adley Rutschman Sat Sep 30 9:20pm ET

Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman (illness) is back in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The switch-hitter will make his return after missing Friday's game due to a minor illness. The 25-year-old appears to be fine now and shouldn't have any lingering issues going forward. Rutschman will bat second and do the catching against right-hander Kutter Crawford during Saturday's game.

Brandon Nimmo Sat Sep 30 9:20pm ET

The New York Mets have placed outfielder Brandon Nimmo (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right shoulder. Nimmo had to leave during the fifth inning of Thursday's game against the Miami Marlins as a result of a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder, but it shouldn't affect his availability for the start of 2024. The 30-year-old hit for more power in the first year of his new Mets contract, matching a career high with 30 doubles and setting a new career best with 24 home runs in 682 trips to the dish. Despite Nimmo's speed and MLB's new base-stealing rules, he didn't unlock that area of his game with just three swipes. He should remain a solid source of runs and average next year with a big boost in fantasy leagues that count walks.

    From RotoBaller

Christian Yelich Sat Sep 30 9:10pm ET

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich is out of the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs. This appears to be a routine rest day for the veteran outfielder. The Brewers continue to monitor Yelich down the stretch as they want to keep him fresh for the postseason. The expectation is that he'll return for Sunday's series finale. In the meantime, Tyrone Taylor will cover right field and bat sixth versus left-hander Jordan Wicks on Saturday. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups accordingly with Yelich on the bench.

Seth Brown Sat Sep 30 9:00pm ET

Oakland Athletics first baseman/outfielder Seth Brown (oblique) is out of Saturday's lineup against the Los Angeles Angels. Brown left Thursday's series finale with the Minnesota Twins due to left oblique soreness and has missed the prior two outings as a result. The 31-year-old will have one more chance to return to play before the campaign concludes after Sunday's series finale in Anaheim. The lefty-hitting Brown is slashing a pedestrian .222/.286/.405 with 14 home runs, 52 RBI, and three stolen bases in 343 at-bats this season. Brent Rooker is in right field and batting third while Carlos Perez is at designated hitter and hitting seventh against right-hander Andrew Wantz on Saturday.
