Right-hander Paul Sewald joined the Tigers on Thursday for the first time since his trade deadline acquisition.
Detroit activated the 35-year-old reliever from the 60-day injured list, where he landed with a right shoulder strain.
Sewald was 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA and two saves in 18 appearances for the Cleveland Guardians before joining the Tigers on July 31 for future considerations.
In other moves Thursday, Detroit designated offseason signing Jose Urquidy for assignment and released fellow right-hander Codi Heuer.
Urquidy, 30, signed a one-year, $1 million deal in March that includes a $4 million club option for 2026. He has no decisions and a 7.71 ERA in two relief appearances this season.
The club said it planned to option Urquidy to Triple-A Toledo on Friday.
Heuer, 29, has no decisions and a 5.40 ERA in two relief appearances with Detroit since being purchased from the Texas Rangers at the trade deadline.
