The Weekly Bender: Week 2 Hot Takes and Takeaways

Fantasy Writer

As the dust settles on NFL Week 2 Sunday action and we gear up for a Monday Night Football doubleheader, there seems to be a weird energy permeating through the fantasy football community. You would think half the field would be elated having likely won their weekly match-up, but instead, there’s an overwhelming sense that this season could be a major disaster of epic proportions. Can you feel it? I can.

Maybe it’s the Joe Burrow toe injury or the lack of targets headed Justin Jefferson’s way this season. Maybe it’s because the Ravens have put up 81 points in two games and Mark Andrews is a ghost. Maybe it’s because the stat-heads and snap-counters from Week 1 look like a bunch of chumps after watching situations they so smugly predicted one way turned out to be the other. Or maybe it’s because grown men are still pissing and moaning about Taylor Swift’s name being mentioned in a broadcast.

Whatever the case is, there is plenty to sort out as we start to look at the Week 3 waiver wire and what the upcoming matchup have in store for us.

Joe Burrow Set to Miss the Next 3 Months

It’s like 2023 all over again, isn’t it? Probably worse, considering he still managed to play 10 games that season. Three months is 12 weeks if you’re into that whole math thing and if we’re doing fantasy football math, it means he’s gone for the rest of the fantasy football regular season. You can whine and cry all you want. The fantasy gods hate you. You paired him up with Ja’Marr Chase and now your stack is dead. Blah blah blah. We heard it then and some of us still managed to overcome the loss.

Stop your crying and check your waiver wire. If Daniel Jones is available, he’s probably your best option. He has a rushing element to his game, he selfishly poaches touchdowns near the goal-line, he’s got some decent receiving weapons and he has a pretty favorable schedule thanks to the AFC South sucking so much. If he’s there, get him.

If he’s not, don’t just grab Jake Browning and think he’s going to save your stack. With upcoming match-ups against the Vikings, Broncos, Lions and Packers, I don’t think Burrow would have survived anyway. If you want someone to try and hold for the rest of the season, give Trevor Lawrence, Matthew Stafford or Geno Smith a look. All of them have good weapons and excellent job security.

If you want to take it week-by-week, then start your streaming this week with Michael Penix, who leads the Falcons into Carolina to face a winless brigade incapable of stopping the run, yet also allows roughly 200 passing yards per game. You can also try Sam Darnold, who may not be the sexy play, but the Seahawks host the Saints and they’re worse than the Panthers. And, of course, you could even try Aaron Rodgers, who takes on a Patriots team that got housed by the Raiders in Week 1 and gave up 27 points to a hapless Dolphins team.

So stop your sniveling and fix your team. If you think losing Burrow trashes your whole season, then maybe fantasy football isn’t your thing.

It Was Always Kenneth Walker

If I had to hear one more idiot tell me about Zach Charbonnet’s snap count and touches from Week 1, I was going to lose my mind. When did one game become an accurate sample size? Especially when one of the running backs barely played in the preseason due to injury? At least we got some clarity as to who the dominant force is out of this backfield.

Walker missed the preseason and Charbonnet got a ton of work. It was only proper to give Charbonnet a heavier workload for Week 1 because Walker was still getting himself prepped and ready. But while the two shared snaps to open the game, it was easy to see which running back best fit Klint Kubiak’s run scheme and the cream rose to the top in the form of 105 yards on just 13 carries. Now you can tell me that Charbonnet had more carries and more snaps, but if you are, at least mention the majority of the fourth quarter when the game was in-hand and Seattle just wanted to run out the clock. You use your backup to do that, not your lead. Moving forward, it’s going to be Walker again. And again. And again.

Rome Odunze is Better Than DJ Moore

I’m sure we can put these two side-by-side and see if that’s actually true, but for our purposes here, it is. I was skeptical of Odunze originally. I feared that his time as the featured receiver at the University of Washington set unrealistic expectations for his time in the NFL and after a mediocre rookie campaign, it seems like that was true. However, two weeks into the season, the picture seems to be painted differently.

For the second-straight week, it is Odunze leading the Bears in both snaps and targets. Even if you take out the snaps he played on special teams, he still leads Moore in both categories, as well as receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. When we watched during the preseason, the expectation was that Moore would fill that Amon-Ra St. Brown role in Ben Johnson’s offense and Odunze would be just like Jameson Williams. But everything we have seen thus far indicates the opposite. Sure, you can tell me it’s just a two-game sample size and things could change, but I’ll hold tight to what few shares I have of Odunze and wait for that one game where Moore outproduces him so I can take a few stabs at buying low.

The Jury Is Still Out on Harold Fannin

I love it when Big Fantasy pushes a guy and we get to push back. Heading into Week 2, I warned people that the situation in Cleveland was eerily similar to what we witnessed last year in Baltimore when Mark Andrews was a ghost in Week 1 and Isaiah Likely was the waiver wire darling everyone overspent on. You were better off grabbing Juwan Johnson at half the cost as he played nearly all the snaps again, was second on the Saints in targets and found his way into the end zone. But alas, everyone wanted Fannin.

The Week 2 breakdown was pretty clear. David Njoku played more snaps and ran more routes. Fannin ran routes on a higher percentage of his snaps, though. They each had five targets and Fannin had one more catch and eight more yards. Pretty even. What do we discern from that? The Browns have two very capable tight ends and will use them both, so the rumors of Njoku’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

It should also be noted that the two tight ends also ranked fourth on the team in targets with Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman and Jerome Ford all seeing more looks. No one is outshining anyone else, so if you’re looking for tight end help, sure, you can look to the Browns, but wouldn’t you rather invest in a tight end who sees a bigger slice of the pie each week?

Quick Hits:

Justin Fields is as much of a bum this week as he was the savior last week. Maybe fix the play-action and RPO work by getting Breece Hall more than 10 carries, but how is his passing work ever going to improve if he doesn’t have any weapons? Beyond Garrett Wilson, who else is there?

Something isn’t right with the Jaguars passing game. This should have been a smash spot against the Bengals, but Trevor Lawrence struggled at times, Brian Thomas caught only four of 12 targets, Travis Hunter was pretty pedestrian, Brenton Strange stunk and they were forced to rely on Parker Washington and Dyami Brown? There’s a report that came out Monday in which Liam Coen said Brian Thomas Jr. entered the week with a wrist injury but no one heard anything like that beforehand. This team should be smashing it through the air right now and yet all anyone cares about is Bhayshul Tuten’s snap-share.

Quinshon Judkins saw just a 26 percent snap share but still led the Browns in carries and rushing yards. Say goodbye to Jerome Ford and let’s keep Dylan Sampson as the third-down pass-catcher. Do that, maybe get a legitimate QB and maybe the Browns aren’t so bad after all? I’m just kidding. They are and always will be.

If Elic Ayomanor isn’t on your radar, maybe he should be. He saw six targets in Week 1 and then another seven here in Week 2. He found his way into the end zone and he’s playing the role of the Titans’ WR2. And call me crazy, but it also looks like Cam Ward may even favor him a touch over Calvin Ridley? I won’t fully commit to that, but keep a watchful eye.

When you head to your waiver wire and you start sorting through wide receiver names like Devontez Walker, Tylan Wallace and Mitchell Tinsley, do yourself a favor and steer clear. As my great granddaddy always used to say, “the sun shines on a dog’s ass once,” and these guys all had their moments in the sun this week.

Bender out!

Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 15

Player Notes
Geno Smith Dec 10 2:40pm CT
Geno Smith

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith (shoulder), who is dealing with a right-shoulder injury, is unlikely to start on Sunday on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Smith will not practice on Wednesday after injuring his right shoulder in the Week 14 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Smith's injury puts Kenny Pickett in line to start this weekend against his former team. The severity of the 35-year-old's shoulder injury is unclear. Smith has been one of the worst starting QBs in the NFL in 2025 in his first year in Vegas, completing 67% of his pass attempts for 2,648 yards, 16 touchdowns, and a league-leading 14 interceptions in 13 starts. He's also been sacked a league-high 49 times. If Pickett comes in and plays well, it wouldn't be a surprise if Smith is benched for the final three games.

Mike Evans Dec 10 2:40pm CT
Mike Evans

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans (collarbone) was limited in practice all week and is officially questionable to play on Thursday night against the division-rival Atlanta Falcons in Week 15, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. Evans was activated from Injured Reserve on Wednesday, though, and head coach Todd Bowles said that the 32-year-old future Hall of Famer has done everything he's needed to do to be active this week for the first time since breaking his collarbone in Week 7. The veteran pass-catcher has yet to take contact in practice, though, so he's iffy to play on Thursday night. But the Bucs are desperate for a win as they seek to stay atop the NFC South division. Evans needs to be rostered in all fantasy leagues, but he'll be a pretty shaky starting option if he's active while being at risk of limited snaps in his first game back.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. Dec 10 2:30pm CT
Tyrone Tracy Jr.

New York Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka said that running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (hip) is "good to go" for the Week 15 game this Sunday against the division-rival Washington Commanders after suffering a hip injury in the Monday night loss to the New England Patriots before the Week 14 bye, per Dan Salomone of Giants.com. Tracy suffered a bruised hip in Week 13 and had to be carted off the field, but he's back at practice on Wednesday and should be active in D.C. The 26-year-old's presence this weekend in New York's backfield will be bad news for fantasy managers who picked up Singletary, hoping that he'd operate as the Giants' clear lead back. Tracy and Singletary could end up sharing touches down the middle on Sunday, making them both RB3/flex options in fantasy lineups. Tracy has seen double-digit carries in each of the last four games, but he has just one touchdown on the year (back on Oct. 19).

CeeDee Lamb Dec 10 2:20pm CT
CeeDee Lamb

Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said on Wednesday that wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (concussion) is "progressing nicely" and has "one or two" more things left to clear the league's concussion protocol, according to Tommy Yarrish of DallasCowboys.com. Lamb will probably be listed as limited on the team's injury report on Wednesday, but he was seen going through drills despite suffering a concussion in last Thursday night's loss to the Detroit Lions. Until the 26-year-old is officially cleared from concussion protocol, he'll be considered questionable to play on Sunday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings. However, as of now, it's looking like he's on the right side of questionable. Ryan Flournoy went off for nine catches, 115 yards, and a touchdown on 13 targets in Week 14 with Lamb injured, making him a popular speculative waiver-wire pickup if Lamb doesn't gain clearance to play this weekend. If Lamb is active, he'll be a must-start in all fantasy lineups in Week 15.

Jayden Daniels Dec 10 2:10pm CT
Jayden Daniels

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said that the team is not talking about shutting down quarterback Jayden Daniels (elbow) for the year, according to Tom Schad of Post Sports. Daniels has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the New York Giants after aggravating his left elbow during last week's loss to the Minnesota Vikings in his first game since dislocating his elbow in Week 9. The second-year quarterback is expected to play again this season, as the injury is not considered to be a long-term issue, but the possibility that Daniels doesn't return this season appears more likely now. The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year's sophomore season has been overshadowed by injury, as he also missed two games to a knee injury and one game to a hamstring injury before his elbow issue. Marcus Mariota is set to make his seventh start of the year in Week 15 versus the Giants at MetLife Stadium.

Josh Jacobs Dec 10 2:00pm CT
Josh Jacobs

Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs (knee) is not practicing on Wednesday, Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated reports. Jacobs was the lone Packers player not participating in Wednesday's practice session. The veteran was seen riding a bike and doing rehab work off to the side as practice began. It's not a great sign for the 28-year-old to open the week, but the team is likely just giving him a rest day. The 28-year-old missed Green Bay's Week 12 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings after injuring his knee in Week 11 against the New York Giants, but he returned for the Packers' past two games and handled his normal workload. If Jacobs winds up missing the Week 15 game versus the Denver Broncos, Emanuel Wilson would be in line to make another spot start. Jacobs is a must-start in fantasy lineups when active.

Lamar Jackson Dec 10 1:50pm CT
Lamar Jackson

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (ankle) is not practicing on Wednesday, per ESPN's Jamison Hensley. Jackson has now missed at least one day of practice for the fifth straight week as he has been limited by ankle, knee, and toe ailments over the last few weeks after missing multiple games with a hamstring injury earlier in the year. The star quarterback hasn't quite looked like himself since returning in Week 9, completing 58.7% of his passes with six touchdowns to four interceptions while totaling 38 rushing attempts for 141 yards and one touchdown, which came this past week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jackson will likely return to practice in some capacity on Thursday and Friday and be good to go for the Week 15 divisional matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Marvin Harrison Jr. Dec 10 1:40pm CT
Marvin Harrison Jr.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (heel) is not participating in Wednesday's practice session, per Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com. Harrison returned in Week 13 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after missing Weeks 11 and 12 due to an appendectomy, but then he missed the Week 14 game against the Los Angeles Rams after being listed as a DNP every day of practice last week with a heel injury. The second-year wideout is in danger of missing his fourth game in five weeks. It's been a frustrating season for Harrison, as he's struggled to stay healthy and hasn't taken a big step forward when he's been on the field, totaling 40 receptions for 594 yards and four touchdowns on 69 targets in 10 games. If Harrison is forced to miss the Week 15 game against the Houston Texans, Michael Wilson would be in line to see another heavy target share.

From RotoBaller

Kyle Pitts Dec 10 1:30pm CT
Kyle Pitts

Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. (knee) tied a season-high on Sunday with 10 targets and eclipsed his season-high yardage total -- which was set in Week 13 -- with 90 yards receiving on six catches. He did not find the end zone, as he's still sitting with just one touchdown on the season, but the 25-year-old has been plenty useful on volume alone, especially in PPR leagues. With Drake London (knee) missing the last three games (and also Week 8), the 6-foot-6 tight end has become Kirk Cousins' favorite pass-catcher, averaging eight targets, six receptions, and 64 yards receiving per contest in the four games with Cousins under center this season. Pitts popped up on the injury report earlier in the week with a knee injury and was a limited participant up to and including Wednesday's practice, resulting in a questionable designation for Thursday's matchup on the road against the Buccaneers. London, however, has been ruled out for TNF, so Pitts could be in line to maintain his temporary status as the team's No. 1 receiver again in Week 15 so long as he's active. Tampa Bay is middle of the pack in terms of fantasy points allowed to opposing tight ends, but the fifth-year pro shapes up as a mid-range TE1 for Thursday, so fantasy managers will want to double-check his status before kickoff.

Anthony Richardson Dec 10 1:20pm CT
Anthony Richardson

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. (eye) was present at Wednesday's practice for the first time in weeks, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Head coach Shane Steichen said on Monday that Richardson wouldn't be activated off Injured Reserve this week, but he also hasn't been ruled out for the season. It's a positive development for the 2023 fourth overall pick, who suffered an orbital fracture in pre-game warmups before the Colts' Week 6 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. With Daniel Jones out for the season with a torn Achilles and rookie Riley Leonard's status up in the air due to a knee injury, the Colts signed 44-year-old Philip Rivers on Tuesday, and he could start as soon as Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Richardson is still in play to return this season, though his timeline is uncertain. His status will be worth monitoring now that he is seemingly getting closer to making a return.

From RotoBaller

Justin Fields Dec 10 12:50pm CT
Justin Fields

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields (knee) is not practicing on Wednesday, per ESPN's Rich Cimini. Fields came down with a sore knee last week and was held out of the Week 14 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The 26-year-old, who has lost the starting QB job, is in danger of missing a second straight game this weekend against the Jacksonville Jaguars unless he can get back on the field in the next two days. Tyrod Taylor (groin) isn't practicing on Monday either, after getting injured in Sunday's loss to Miami. There's a scenario where Fields could make the start this weekend if he's able to get past his knee injury and Taylor is ruled out. If both Taylor and Fields aren't cleared to play in Week 15, undrafted rookie Brady Cook would make his first NFL start. That would be bad news for all of New York's offensive skill players.

From RotoBaller

Drake London Dec 10 12:50pm CT
Drake London

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London (knee) has been ruled out for the Thursday night game against the division-rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15, according to Marc Raimondi of ESPN. The writing was on the wall for London to miss a fourth straight game after he missed practice on both Monday and Tuesday. The 24-year-old hasn't practiced or played since spraining his PCL back in Week 11. Fantasy managers who stay alive in the playoffs will be hoping that London can return to practice next week and play in Week 16 versus the Arizona Cardinals. With London sidelined again this week, Darnell Mooney will once again be Atlanta's WR1, although he'll be a volatile WR4/flex. Mooney had 74 yards and a touchdown in the first game without London, but in the last two weeks, he's caught only three passes for 31 yards. Tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. has benefited the most in the last three weeks with London out.

From RotoBaller

Tyrone Tracy Jr. Dec 10 12:40pm CT
Tyrone Tracy Jr.

New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (hip) is at practice on Wednesday, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. Tracy suffered a bruised hip in the Monday night loss to the New England Patriots in Week 13, but he had the Week 14 bye to rest up and is now back at practice as the Giants begin preparations for a Week 15 divisional clash this Sunday against the Washington Commanders. The 26-year-old's injury didn't look good at the time, and he had to be carted to the locker room. He'll probably end up limited on Wednesday, but his presence at practice is a good sign for his availability this weekend. Devin Singletary had 15 touches in Week 13 for 102 scrimmage yards and a touchdown, which has made him a popular waiver-wire pickup going into the fantasy playoffs. Singletary's upside in Week 15 will take a hit, though, if Tracy is able to return to New York's backfield.

From RotoBaller

Tyrod Taylor Dec 10 12:40pm CT
Tyrod Taylor

New York Jets quarterback Tyrod Taylor (groin) is not taking part in practice on Wednesday, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. Justin Fields (knee) isn't practicing either, so undrafted rookie QB Brady Cook will take the first-team reps under center. Taylor made the start in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins, but injured his groin early and was replaced by Cook. The 36-year-old veteran went just 1-for-4 passing for six yards and an interception on Sunday. Taylor has two more days to get back on the practice field, but he should be considered questionable to play in Week 15 against the first-place Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. He has boosted New York's passing game slightly since taking over the starting gig from Fields, but he doesn't offer very much upside at all in fantasy football. Taylor has completed 59.7% of his passes for 779 yards, five TDs, and five picks in his six games (four starts) in 2025.

From RotoBaller

Garrett Wilson Dec 10 12:30pm CT
Garrett Wilson

The New York Jets have yet to open the 21-day practice window for wide receiver Garrett Wilson (knee), according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. Head coach Aaron Glenn reiterated that the team still has to consult with doctors on Wilson's status. Wilson remains on Injured Reserve after aggravating a knee injury back in Week 10. At this point, with only four games remaining in the 2025 season, it's fair to wonder if the 25-year-old pass-catcher will be allowed to come back with the Jets out of playoff contention. With Wilson almost certain to be ruled out for Week 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, receivers John Metchie III and Adonai Mitchell will continue to operate as the top two receivers, but they might be taking passes from undrafted rookie quarterback Brady Cook this week with both Tyrod Taylor (groin) and Justin Fields (knee) nursing injuries.

From RotoBaller

Tee Higgins Dec 10 12:30pm CT
Tee Higgins

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said that wide receiver Tee Higgins (concussion) will be limited and take part in the individual portion of practice on Wednesday as part of the league's concussion protocol, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic. Higgins is in the league's concussion protocol again after hitting his head on the turf in Buffalo on Sunday in the Week 14 loss. The 26-year-old is up in the air to play this weekend against the division-rival Baltimore Ravens, but it's good news that he's on the practice field for the first practice of the week. He suffered a concussion back in Week 12 and was held out of the Thanksgiving night win over the Ravens in Week 13, which could play into the decision on whether he'll play this week. Higgins returned with a bang on Sunday with six catches, 92 yards, and two touchdowns, and he's a must-start in fantasy if he's active. If Higgins misses another game, Andrei Iosivas would be in play as a touchdown-dependent WR4/flex in deeper fantasy leagues.

From RotoBaller

Breece Hall Dec 10 12:20pm CT
Breece Hall

New York Jets running back Breece Hall (knee) is not practicing on Wednesday due to knee soreness, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. The Jets could be giving Hall some rest late in the season, but it's definitely something we'll be monitoring closely as Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars approaches. If the 24-year-old is limited in any way or ruled out for this weekend, Isaiah Davis would become a plug-and-play RB option for fantasy managers as the Jets' No. 1 back. Kene Nwangwu and Khalil Herbert could also be involved in the backfield. However, with undrafted rookie quarterback Brady Cook potentially making his first NFL start in Week 15, all of New York's offensive skill players would need to be downgraded this weekend. Going into Week 15, Hall is the RB17 in half-PPR points with 877 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and 309 receiving yards and another score.

From RotoBaller

Brady Cook Dec 10 12:10pm CT
Brady Cook

New York Jets rookie quarterback Brady Cook will get first-team reps at practice on Wednesday with both Tyrod Taylor (groin) and Justin Fields (knee) missing practice, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. With Taylor and Fields both hurt, the Jets re-signed Adrian Martinez as QB insurance as they head into a Week 15 date with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Cook took over for the injured Taylor in Sunday's 34-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins and went 14-for-30 passing for 163 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. The 24-year-old looked like an undrafted rookie. If both Taylor and Fields aren't cleared to play this weekend, Cook would be forced into making his first NFL start. Even in two-QB superflex leagues, fantasy managers would want to look for better options. Regardless of who is starting under center for the Jets, the Jaguars' defense/special teams unit will be a popular play in Week 15.

From RotoBaller

Tyrod Taylor Dec 10 12:03pm CT
Tyrod Taylor

New York Jets QB Brady Cook will receive the first-team repetitions in practice Wednesday, Dec. 10. QBs Tyrod Taylor (groin) and Justin Fields (knee) won't practice Wednesday, and they'll all be evaluated later in the week.

Fantasy Spin: There's really nothing to see here. None of the three are worth starting against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

From TheHuddle

Marcus Mariota Dec 10 11:53am CT
Marcus Mariota

Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (elbow) had no structural damage to his left elbow, but he is out for Week 15. QB Marcus Mariota will start.

Fantasy Spin: Mariota is definitely an option in two-QB and superflex leagues against the New York Giants. The Giants have allowed the fifth-most fantasy points per game to opposing QBs the last five weeks.

From TheHuddle
