Goff is setup for a big Week 5
This is your friendly reminder that the dreaded byes start this week. And we start the byes with some top-notch players sitting out. We have the Falcons, Bears, Packers and Steelers on a bye. Just plan accordingly. I always advocate planning for your byes. You can look ahead and figure out when your top players are going to sit out. Find those backups with favorable matchups to try to fill the holes. Just something to keep in mind.
Now for my random thoughts for the week. . . . .
It might have been a little premature to write off the rookie class of running backs after three weeks. These guys are getting going and in a big way, showing their big-time ability. Ashton Jeanty finally had that huge game. Omarion Hampton looked fantastic in his start last week. Quinshon Judkins is getting a ton of work and producing since finally signing with the Browns. Remember, it is a long season and it takes some time for some of these players. Patience.
I also guess it was a little premature to write off Travis Etienne. He has looked like a different player this year. He looks so explosive. It does not look like the same player from last season. Etienne has at least 11 fantasy points every game and is currently 10th overall in fantasy running back scoring. He is going to end up being a huge bargain for any team that drafted him. I don’t see him as a sell-high player at all. I would hold him and enjoy the ride.
I know he is not going to keep his current pace, but if he does, Puka Nacua finishes with 179 receptions for 2,138 yards and four touchdowns. Those numbers are just crazy. Again, it would be hard to fathom him continuing his current pace, but this just shows you what kind of start he is off to this season. Just crazy.
I’m really impressed with the Saints coaching staff. They are doing a great job with that team, especially offensively. The Saints lack some talent on that side of the ball but are creative and doing a good job of playing to the strengths of starting quarterback Spencer Rattler. If this team can bring some more talent in during the offseason, I think they could have some really exciting fantasy players. New Orleans has the right people in charge. Let’s just hope they can get the right players on the field now.
The Ravens slow start might be my biggest surprise this year. I thought this team was a Super Bowl contender. Baltimore just doesn’t look like the same team, though, especially defensively. And even the offense hasn’t looked as dominating, including Derrick Henry. Maybe Henry is actually slowing down for the first time in his career. And now Lamar Jackson is dinged up and might not play, which is even worse news for this offense. Things are not looking good in Baltimore right now.
His numbers aren’t always off the charts, but Josh Jacobs is about as safe of a RB1 as it gets because of all his volume. He just racks up the touches on a weekly basis and never seems to slow down. His workload gives him one of the safest floors in fantasy football. Jacobs has 90 touches in four games, averaging 23 touches per game. You have to love that volume, especially in this solid Packers offense. Sometimes consistency means as much as anything when it comes to winning your fantasy league, making Jacobs a possible league winner.
I admire Brock Bowers for playing through his knee injury but it is clear he isn’t 100 percent healthy. He just isn’t making the plays after the catch that you have come to expect from him. He has fewer than 50 yards three straight games despite having at least four catches all of those games. Hopefully, that knee gets closer to 100 percent sooner then later so Bowers can get back to having those big gamers.
News and Notes: The Commanders signed receiver Robbie Chosen to their practice squad on Tuesday. He gives the team some depth at receiver and could end up being active for the Week 5 game. . . . .The Dolphins signed receiver Cedrick Wilson from the Saints practice squad on Tuesday. He could get some immediate playing time after the season-ending injury to Tyreek Hill.
HOT PLAYS
Jared Goff, QB, Lions. Goff has been a little quiet in recent weeks but is still playing good football. He had multiple touchdown passes against a good Brown defense last week. And we can’t forget about the five-touchdown performance from him in Week 2 against the Bears. This Lions offense is starting to roll and play like they did last season. This should be scary for the rest of the league, especially the Bengals this week. Cincinnati is a team reeling. The Bengals allow the seventh most fantasy points to quarterbacks and allowed more than 500 total yards of offense last week. The Lions offense, including Goff, should post huge numbers in this matchup.
Alvin Kamara, RB, Saints. Kamara hasn’t been off the charts this year but he is getting his touches and producing. He has at least 11 fantasy points three of four games. He has 19 or more touches three straight games. Kamara racks up the work for the Saints - even with Kendre Miller getting a few more touches in recent weeks. We wouldn’t worry too much about that just yet, especially against the Giants this week. New York allows the fifth most fantasy points to running backs and 100-plus rushing yards every game this year.
Michael Pittman, WR, Colts. Pittman had a season-high 10 targets last week. He found the end zone once again, having touchdowns three of four games. He has at least 15 fantasy points three of those games. Pittman has been a consistent producer in a much better Colts passing game this year. We look for more of the same against him in Week 5 against the Raiders. Las Vegas allows the third most fantasy points to receivers and has struggled to stop the top target in opposing teams.
Khalil Shakir, WR, Bills. There was thought that Keon Coleman was going to emerge as the go-to target for the Bills this year, but that isn’t happening. Shakir remains Josh Allen’s favorite target. Shakir has at least 12 fantasy points three of four games. He has touchdowns two straight games. This offense is starting to get it going once again, making Shakir a good fantasy option once again. Shakir should have another good game this week against the Patriots, a team that allows the 12th most fantasy points to receivers. This could be a high-scoring game with plenty of fantasy points to be had on both sides of the ball.
COLD PLAYS
Trevor Lawrence, QB, Jaguars. The Jaguars are winning games but Lawrence isn’t helping many fantasy teams with his play. He has less than 14 fantasy points three of four games. He has failed to top 200-passing yards two games. Lawrence is more of a matchup play at this point of the season. And a game this week against the Chiefs is not a good one for him. The Chiefs have allowed fewer than 200-passing yards three straight games, including matchups with the Eagles and Ravens.
Jordan Mason, RB, Vikings. Mason has played well in a starting role, getting plenty of chances in the Vikings offense. He was pretty ho-hum last week, though, rushing 16 times for 57 yards. He averaged just 3.6 yards per carry. Mason could have more tough sledding this week against a really good Browns rush defense. Cleveland allows the second fewest fantasy points to running backs and less than 100-rushing yards all but one game. Some of the top fantasy backs in the game have struggled against this Browns run defense.
Nick Chubb, RB, Texans. Chubb is the starter in Houston for now but Woody Marks is knocking on the door to take that job. Chubb just hasn’t shown much despite having at least 12 carries all but one game. His season high in rushing is 60 yards. So despite having a prime matchup against a bad Ravens defense this week, we would steer clear of Chubb. Marks is ready to take over this backfield and Chubb isn’t worth the risk.
Chris Godwin, WR, Bucs. Godwin is back and played 81 percent of the snaps. He got a full workload and came out of the game fine. The only concern is he started a little slow in his first game back from a terrible ankle injury. It might take him some time to get things going like he did in the past. And a game this week against the Seahawks is another tough one for Godwin. Seattle allows the third fewest fantasy points to receivers. The Seahawks have allowed 205 or fewer passing yards three straight games.
Ladd McConkey, WR, Chargers. It is hard to bench McConkey but you might want to consider it. The numbers don’t like. He is yet to be targeted double-digit times in a game. McConkey has failed to hit double-digit fantasy points three straight and hasn’t hit 50 yards in any of those games. He has really struggled to get the looks since the arrival of Keenan Allen and emergence of Quentin Johnston. McConkey is a scary play for fantasy teams right now - no matter the matchup.
SLEEPERS
C.J. Stroud, QB, Texans. Stroud finally showed some signs of life last week, topping 20 fantasy points for the first time all season. He completed 22-of-28 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover. It was an encouraging performance after his slow start to the season. Maybe Stroud can find that magic from his rookie season once again. You have to like his chances for another good game this week against the Ravens. Baltimore is a mess defensively, allowing the third most fantasy points to quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes just had a four-touchdown performance against this defense last week.
Tommy Tremble, TE, Panthers. Tremble had a season-high eight targets last week, catching five passes for 42 yards and a touchdown. He looked good in a starting role for the Panthers with Ja’Tavion Sanders hurt. As long as he is starting, Tremble has some potential in this Panthers offense. Carolina has little in the passing game outside of Tet McMillan. Tremble could surprise again this week against the Dolphins. Miami has struggled to stop the tight end, allowing the third most fantasy points to tight ends.
Ollie Gordon, RB, Dolphins. Gordon played a season-high 26 percent of the snaps last week. He ran six times for just 10 yards, though. It was not a good showing for Gordon. The positive is he played and got some carries. He had a touchdown his previous game, so the potential is there for him to produce if he keeps getting the touches. And a game this week against the Panthers is a good one for Gordon. You could see the Dolphins get up in this game, leaning on the run late. Plus, with Tyreek Hill out, Miami also could be a little more run-first going forward. This bodes well for Gordon to start to get in a rhythm offensively.
Tre Tucker, WR, Raiders. Tucker has been up and down this year. He had huge games Weeks 1 and 3 but fewer than 15-receiving yards each of his other two games. Needless to say, he has been boom or bust. Tucker has the potential to boom this week against the Colts, though. Indy allowed the fourth most fantasy points to receivers and just got torched by the Rams passing game last week, allowing nearly 400-passing yards. Tucker could be a good spot play in this one.
Kendrick Bourne, WR, 49ers. The 49ers are all beat up at receiver. Bourne is about the last man standing. He played 67 percent of the snaps last week and 72 percent the previous game. Bourne has at least three receptions two of three games. He could produce some decent numbers if given the chance. And with the 49ers looking for options to step up in the passing game, Bourne is likely the best bet for this week. And he gets a Rams team this week that allows the 10th most fantasy points to receivers.
High/Low Scoring Games
Each week we will take a look at some of the high and low scoring games for the coming week. In high scoring affairs, get your marginal players on those teams in your lineup to take advantage of the possible points barrage. And in the low scoring games, keep those marginal players on the bench and make sure to have your defenses involved in those contests.
High Scoring Games: 49ers/Rams, Cowboys/Jets, Raiders/Colts, Lions/Bengals, Patriots/Bills, Commanders/Chargers.
Low Scoring Games: Vikings/Browns, Texans/Ravens.

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries during Sunday's Week 5 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He also caught two passes for 33 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown reception. If not for finding the end zone, Gibbs would have had a relatively modest final line of 14 touches and 87 yards, so fantasy managers will appreciate that he was able to cross the goal line. It was interesting to see David Montgomery reclaim the lead-back role with his 18 carries, but that could have been a product of the game script. It also may have been part of the Lions' effort to honor the narrative of Montgomery returning to his birthplace of Cincinnati once the score got out of hand. Whatever the reason, managers should have no concerns about Gibbs going forward. He remains one of the league's most talented and versatile running backs, and it doesn't hurt that he plays for a high-powered offense within a 4-1 team. The 23-year-old remains a mid-range RB1 option in fantasy football for Week 6 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
From RotoBaller
New York Jets running back Breece Hall rushed for 113 yards on 14 carries during Sunday's Week 5 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He also caught four of five targets for 42 receiving yards and lost a fumble. While Hall's fumble and lack of a touchdown are disappointing, his efficiency was quite impressive. The 24-year-old averaged 8.1 yards per carry and 10.5 yards per reception, delivering chunk plays to move the chains and push the ball down the field on Sunday. It wasn't quite enough as New York fell to Dallas, but the Jets should remain encouraged by the offensive contributions of players like Hall, Justin Fields, and Garrett Wilson. New York's leading rusher will remain a solid RB2 option in fantasy football ahead of next week's international game against the Denver Broncos.
From RotoBaller
New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson caught six of his 10 targets for 71 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's Week 5 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson remains Justin Fields' preferred target in the passing game and ranks in the WR2 tier as a result, but his Week 5 fantasy performance was admittedly inflated by a garbage-time touchdown. The former Ohio State product found the end zone with New York trailing by three possessions and just 2:49 left on the clock. Of course, fantasy managers don't care how or when players produce, as the results are the same either way. New York should continue to play from behind for most of this season, leaving ample opportunities for Wilson to boost his stats and reward fantasy managers as a mid-to-low WR2.
From RotoBaller
Arizona Cardinals running back Michael Carter rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries during Sunday's Week 5 loss to the Tennessee Titans. He also caught all five of his targets for an additional 22 receiving yards. After plenty of speculation about the backfield roles in Arizona, Carter handled early-down work, Emari Demercado played third downs, and Bam Knight rotated in occasionally. Carter easily saw the bulk of the workload, totaling 23 touches while staying involved both on the ground and through the air. His lack of yardage efficiency could leave the backfield in a by-committee state ahead of Week 6, but Carter has the early advantage in the competition. He'll continue to rank as a high-end RB3/flex for next week's clash in Indianapolis.
From RotoBaller
Tennessee Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley caught five of his 10 targets for 131 yards in Sunday's Week 5 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The veteran pass catcher finally got out of the rut that had plagued him for the first four weeks of the season. In fact, this Sunday, Ridley delivered his first double-digit fantasy performance (PPR) of 2025. While it's possible that a softer matchup against the Cardinals was the main reason for his breakout, the good news is that Tennessee takes on another subpar defense next week in Las Vegas. Ridley remains a solid WR3/flex option for the time being.
From RotoBaller
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith caught eight of his 10 targets for 114 yards during Sunday's Week 5 loss against the Denver Broncos. After a frustrating Week 4 in which Smith caught just two passes and was subsequently reported to be "frustrated" within the offense, the talented receiver bounced back in a huge way. The 26-year-old was able to impress despite the Eagles' passing game struggles and despite an unfavorable matchup against a strong Broncos defense. If Smith was able to thrive in this week's situation, he should have no trouble producing next week against the New York Giants. He's a low-end WR2 in fantasy football ahead of Week 6.
From RotoBaller
Miami Dolphins tight end Darren Waller caught all five of his targets for 78 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's Week 5 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The veteran pass catcher was primarily involved in the first half, as all five catches came within the first 20 minutes of the contest. We'd like to see him contribute steadily throughout the whole game, but we also know that fantasy managers won't complain about a 78-yard, one-touchdown showing from a tight end, regardless of the timestamps when he caught each pass. Waller has scored at least 17.7 fantasy points (PPR) in each of his first two games back from retirement, ranking as the overall TE2 in fantasy football over the last two weeks. His volume and scoring ability instantly make him a top streaming option for Week 6, as he should rank as a top-12 fantasy tight end in his matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
From RotoBaller
Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta caught five of his six targets for 92 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's Week 5 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He scored his first touchdown of the season on a trick play that involved a pass from running back David Montgomery. By breaking into the end zone, LaPorta turned in his best fantasy outing of the 2025 season. He was the fourth-highest tight end scorer in Week 5 and ranks as the overall TE6 in total scoring this year. While there is some inconsistency in his production week over week, fantasy managers should feel confident that LaPorta is still a top-10 fantasy tight end. He should be started in all leagues ahead of next week's competitive matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
From RotoBaller
Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries during Sunday's Week 5 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He also converted his lone target into a six-yard reception. Furthermore, the veteran running back was involved in a trick play as he threw a three-yard touchdown pass to tight end Sam LaPorta. In the end, Montgomery finished the victory with 71 scrimmage yards and two total touchdowns. He was the team's leading rusher and also posted a season-high in carries. While we can't necessarily expect Montgomery to replicate this type of performance going forward, he has established himself as a high-end RB3/flex option once again in 2025. He should be started in leagues with at least 10 teams when he takes on the Kansas City Chiefs next week.
From RotoBaller
New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs caught 10 of his 12 targets for 146 yards during Sunday's Week 5 win over the Buffalo Bills. Diggs served as Drake Maye's favorite target and made several key catches against his old team, including toe-taps on the sideline and several first downs. The veteran receiver was a main reason why the Patriots were able to maintain a lead over -- and defeat -- the Bills on Sunday night. While Diggs was relatively inconsistent over the first few weeks of the season, he has come on quite strong lately, eclipsing 100 yards in back-to-back games. His 40.7 fantasy points (PPR) over the last two weeks rank seventh-best among all NFL receivers. He'll look to carry this momentum into a favorable matchup against the Saints, ranking as a low-end WR2 in fantasy football.
From RotoBaller
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley wasn't a big part of the game plan in the team's first loss of the season on Sunday against the visiting Denver Broncos in Week 5. Barkley had only six rushing attempts for 30 yards on the ground, but he salvaged his day for fantasy managers with three catches (three targets) for an additional 58 yards and a 47-yard receiving touchdown, his first receiving score of the year. It was some concerning usage for Barkley in a game that the Eagles led by multiple scores late into the second half. Barkley's previous low this year for rushing attempts has been 18. Perhaps it's all part of Philly's plan as they head into a short turnaround in Week 6 in a divisional clash against Barkley's former team, the New York Giants. If the 28-year-old isn't used as more of a bell-cow back in that one, fantasy managers will be even more worried.
From RotoBaller
New York Giants tight end Theo Johnson is now firmly in the mix as a waiver-wire pickup heading into Week 6 after catching six of his seven targets for 33 yards and two more touchdowns in Sunday's 26-14 loss on the road to the New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, fellow TE Daniel Bellinger led the team with 52 receiving yards on four receptions. Both the 24-year-old's six catches and seven targets were season highs, and it's looking like he's going to need to be taken seriously as a high-end QB2 now that receiver Malik Nabers (knee) is lost for the season. Johnson's upside certainly takes a hit with Bellinger involved, but fantasy managers can't just ignore Johnson's three touchdowns in rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart's first two NFL starts. He'll be in play as a touchdown-dependent TE2 on a short week next Thursday night against the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6.
From RotoBaller
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Ryan Flournoy stepped up in Week 5 with CeeDee Lamb (ankle) and KaVontae Turpin (foot) out, catching six of his nine targets for a team-high 114 yards in the 37-22 victory over the hosting New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. He also added 10 rushing yards on two carries. Flournoy's six catches were one behind team leader Jake Ferguson, and his nine targets were tied with Ferguson for the team lead. The 25-year-old stepped up alongside George Pickens in another big passing game from quarterback Dak Prescott. This was Flournoy's first game with over 41 receiving yards in his career, and while he proved he can step up when needed, this could easily be his best showing in 2025. It will all depend on when Lamb and Turpin can return, which could be as early as Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers. Flournoy shouldn't be high on your priority list as a waiver-wire addition in 12-team fantasy leagues.
From RotoBaller
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had a strong day for his fantasy managers through the air, but it came in the team's first loss of the season in a 21-17 defeat at home to the Denver Broncos in Week 5. Hurts went 23-for-38 passing for 280 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. The 27-year-old only ran the ball two times for three yards while being sacked a season-high six times for a loss of 23 yards. Hurts' pass attempts, completions, and passing yardage were all season highs, and he has now thrown for multiple touchdown passes in the last three weeks. Given the strong defensive opponent, Hurts' overall performance was pretty impressive, but he was also unable to close out the visiting Broncos after leading for the majority of the game. Hurts has high-end QB1 upside because he can do it with both his arms and his legs, and he'll have a better matchup on Thursday night in Week 6 when the Eagles play the division-rival New York Giants.
From RotoBaller
Washington Commanders wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. stayed heavily involved in the team's offense with Terry McLaurin (quadriceps) missing a second straight game on Sunday on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers. Samuel led the team in targets (11), receptions (eight), and receiving yards (96) while catching his third touchdown of the season in the 27-10 victory in Week 5 in quarterback Jayden Daniels' return from a knee sprain. The 29-year-old has had a nice bounce-back season in 2025 so far in his first year in Washington while being the team's most consistent pass-catcher. Through the first five weeks, Samuel has 346 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns. As long as he can stay healthy, Samuel should continue to be a must-start in fantasy lineups, even when McLaurin returns from his quad injury. Samuel will have quite a bit of upside in Week 6 on Monday night against the Chicago Bears, especially if McLaurin misses a third game.
From RotoBaller
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff led the charge as his team scored at least 34 points for the fourth straight week in a 37-24 Week 5 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Goff completed 19 of 23 pass attempts for 258 yards and three touchdowns, although he did get sacked four times and lost a fumble while playing without left tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder). Through five games this season, Goff has thrown for 1,187 yards, 12 touchdowns, and two interceptions. He remains a matchup-dependent, low-end fantasy starter in single-quarterback formats. Goff and the Lions will face a difficult test in Week 6 as they travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.
From RotoBaller
New England Patriots running back Antonio Gibson (knee) has been ruled out for the remainder of his team's Week 5 matchup against the Buffalo Bills due to a knee injury. Gibson recorded six carries for 21 yards and one catch for five yards before getting injured. In his absence, Patriots rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson and veteran back Rhamondre Stevenson will likely split the backfield work. Stevenson fumbled for the third time this season in the first half against Buffalo, so Week 5 could be Henderson's best chance to stake his claim to the Patriots' backfield.
From RotoBaller
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson recorded seven catches for 49 yards and two touchdowns on nine targets in his team's 37-22 Week 5 win over the New York Jets. Ferguson continues to produce like one of the best tight ends in the NFL in 2025. Through five games, the 26-year-old has hauled in 41 catches for 272 yards and three touchdowns on 48 targets. Ferguson looks like a must-start player at the tight end position heading into a juicy Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
From RotoBaller
New Orleans Saints wide receiver Rashid Shaheed recorded four catches for 114 yards and a touchdown in his team's 26-14 Week 5 win over the New York Giants. Known as one of the league's premier big-play threats. Shaheed broke loose for an 87-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. The 27-year-old has recorded 22 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns on 30 targets through five games so far this season. Shaheed ranks third on the Saints in targets behind wide receiver Chris Olave and tight end Juwan Johnson, but he's got far more explosive potential than any of his New Orleans teammates. Shaheed remains a boom/bust flex option in the majority of fantasy leagues.
From RotoBaller
Filling in for the injured Bucky Irving (shoulder, foot), Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Rachaad White recorded 14 carries for 41 yards and two touchdowns in his team's 38-35 Week 5 win over the Seattle Seahawks. White also chipped in four catches for 30 yards. The 26-year-old looks like the clear lead back in Tampa Bay while Irving is sidelined. In Week 5, White earned 18 touches while fellow Bucs running back Sean Tucker earned just six. White now has 212 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns on 49 total touches through five games. For as long as Irving is out, White could provide solid fantasy RB2 production.
